This week I completed my first Exploring Disney session. The topic focused was Costuming from the Spotlight On section. Costuming is a very important department at Disney that’s not just in charge of making the character costumes, the ones we wear at work but also our name tags.
Costuming is broken up into different categories which are design & development, production, and support. Design & development consist of costume designer, costume development manager, design & development coordinator, cosmetology designer, material engineer, digital sculptor, and industrial designer. Production includes costume assistant, sewing specialist, costumer, pattern maker, workroom manager, milliner who makes hat, garment cutter and cosmetology specialist. The support area of costuming includes costume buyer, project manager, statistical specialist, costume inventory manager and lastly costume support specialist.
Costuming consists of multiple job areas providing a job for everyone based on what your interest in costuming is. As a person whose other interests is in fashion, this was a good session to participate in. Since I have no experience in costuming it is best I start out in Costuming Operations and work my way up. Another interest I had in costuming was the Statistical Specialist position which deals with the data part of everything putting my business minor to use.
