Mentor Text (HW for April 15)

For Unit 3, I choose to create my genre through the form of a monologue podcast, or ‘solocast’. My podcast will be about how I, a freshmen in college from 2020, dealt with stress during quarantine. My inspiration for my style to discuss my experience comes from the Youtuber, ‘The Modern Martial Artist’, who does breakdowns, analysis and discussions on not just fight techniques, but as well on the personal life of the fighter. The Modern Martial Artist’s audience consists of people who want to not only understand combat sport techniques, but also the lifestyle and mentality of those who are professionals. What makes his type of podcast attractive is the analytical tone. The orator’s voice and use of vocabulary is subtle and critical, which makes the tone of the podcast an ear opener to listeners. It starts with a brutal introduction that appeals to viewers thus keeping their attention for the half hour long video. Ex: “This man legitimately wanted his opponent to die”, “Lord, help me kill this man for he is not righteous”. The video uses well known historical context that most people know then transitions to details almost nobody was aware of to shock them. The monologue podcast inspires me to make a monologue podcast of my own. In it, I will discuss the stress and pressure of being isolated, the side effects, and how I endure and cope with it.

Videos that gave me my idea:

Ideas

  1. The prompt for this unit asks you to answer one or both of the following questions: “How has the past year challenged or changed you?” or “What have you learned in the past year that you would like to share with others?”  But remember, you may have learned something surprising and not at all covid-related!  What do you think you would like to write about in this unit?

The past year challenged me because I had to adapt to new situations it was something that will be different from what I used to. For example, for my classes  I had to switched from going in person, seeing my classmates everyday, teachers to looking at a computer screen and not able to interact with my friends and teachers. Second was going outside, visiting new places, new experiences and new challenges to take upon. This past year has really changed me I started to see the world through a new perspective no longer did I see we that we have all the time of the world on the contrary I saw that life is short. So many things I wanted to try that I was taken for granted my time and days that now I’m willing to try something new, like for example I started a new job that is going well for me that even I can travel now.

  1. The assignment also asks you to be specific– to talk about a particular aspect of the year that only you can talk about (or to tweak it in your own particular way!) How do you intend to get specific?

I tend to get specific by talking about my feelings and emotions throughout that particular aspect of my year. I intend to talk about the fear I have, my hopes, the happiness, joy I was feeling, the surprise or the terror I felt. Another way is being specific about what I saw, my surroundings, where I was, what time I was there etc. Lastly, quoting what was said that day.

  1.  What kind of document are you thinking about  making? A video essay with interviews? A video of you reciting a poem? A series of infographics? A comic book? Look at the Unit Three assignment for ideas, but you can branch out from there if you like.  Remember, the requirement is that you use words and images  OR words and sounds OR words, images and sounds.

Most likely I will do a series of infographics.

  1. What are your concerns about this assignment?  That is, maybe you want to make a podcast, but you really have no idea how to do that (see THIS handout– maybe it will help). Or you want to do a comic but you can’t draw (THIS might help)

What I’m supposed to say, how to fully engage my reader to what I’m trying to say. My pictures, the sounds I can used, how much to write or how little to write. The resources to used, my time if I have enough time to finish this assignment.

Why is the word “disabled” not mentioned in the media when police brutality incidents are reported?

This article is about the fact that half of the citizens that are killed by police have a disability and that the media organizations aren’t reporting that the victims are disabled but are reporting the most common race that are victims of police brutality which is African Americans. The article discusses how the word “disability” is not getting big media attention as black people do because it never recognizes the aspects and it is not commonly reported. According to the article,  “Media coverage of police violence fails to recognise or report the disability element when Americans are injured or killed by law enforcement, resulting in their stories be segregated from the issue in the media” stated by David M Perry, an Illinois University professor and Lawrence Carter-Long, a disability rights activist when they did a report on half of all disabled people killed by police that was published to bring attention and to spread awareness.  Police brutality doesn’t only happen in the U.S, it happens around the world. For example, the U.K happens to have the same issue. “Eight of the 17 people who died in, or following, police custody in England and Wales in 2014-15 were identified as having mental health issues. Ten of the overall total recorded deaths had involved restraint”, according to Independent Police Complaints Commission Figures. This demonstrates that the country has the big amount of data as the U.S in police brutality incidents involving the disabled and it doesn’t really get any media attention as well. This article relates to my research question by indicating that the police brutality incidents that involve disabled people rarely mentioned in the media and that there are details that answers my research question.
