How does the History of Gun Control correlates with Gun Violence (in metropolitan areas)?

Quick briefing on the origins of firearms:
The first firearms traces back to the 10th century. During the Yuan Dynasty, Chinese invented the first guns. The first guns were made from a tube of bamboo filled with gunpowder to fire a spear. Overtime gun technology spread to other nations as well as evolving into the fierce, dangerous and controversial weapon we know it as. Guns are an American tradition. How does this play out in real life.

Origins and history of American gun culture:
America’s traditional hunger for guns dates back all the way to America’s frontiersman days. During the American frontier era, knowing how to hunt and shoot was a necessity for survival due to the wild and dangerous agrarian environment. Almost everybody during the Frontiersman era used a firearm of some sort. Before the American Revolutionary war, the government did not have a full-time army, thus being an armed civilian was more necessary. Either you were hunting animals, or fighting against other combatants (notably Native Americans). In modern times, gun culture is more associated with rural living and hunting animals as a form of animal population control.

There is no question about it. Americans venerate guns. It is, after all, a glorified cultural traditional in America. In fact, it may be venerated to a scary degree due to the many civilians that own them along with how easy it is to obtain them, including through nefarious means. One scary example of how Americans traditionally loves guns is data shows there are more guns in America than there are American people. In America, there are 120.5 guns per 100 residents. The total number of handguns in the world is 857 million. America owns 45 percent of those handguns.

History of American gun control and how it began:
The term “gun control” is described as laws that regulate the manufacturing, modification and possession of guns. It took 143 years for gun control to come to fruition after the ratification of the 2nd Amendment. After the St. Valentine’s Day massacre in 1929, the first gun control legislation was passed under president FDR, known as the National Firearms Act (NFA) in 1934. It was a means to decrease gun violence by taxing the manufacturing and distribution of guns. 4 years later, the Federal Firearms Act (FFA) was enacted. The FFA restricted people with a criminal background from getting a gun while also requiring gun shows to have a federal firearms license to sell weapons.

Following the assassination of president John F. Kennedy, the FFA was replaced by the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA). The GCA are a series of federal laws that examines and regulates who can buy or sell firearms. Such regulations include prohibiting people who are felons, below the age of 21, and mentally handicapped as well as restricting obtaining guns overseas.

The “frightening” true nature of gun control in the United States:
Unfortunately, there are so many loopholes around purchasing a gun. For starters, gun sellers, including sellers with a Federal Firearms License (FFL), can sell guns privately under the Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA). This federal law, signed by president Reagan, allows FFL sellers to distribute guns to people with less restrictions. This opened a slippery slope of loopholes for individuals not fit to carry guns.

Background checks are required to be examined before one can legally buy a gun. However, background check enforcement is extremely weak. The seller must run the background check through the federal system which evaluates factors such as criminal and mental health history. But background checks are infamously underfunded and underresourced. The FBI can take days to complete a background check to give authorization to buy a gun. By that time, a gun is already sold. This results in misinformation or reports taking too long which results in the customer being allowed to purchase a gun. Another issue is the appetite for some sellers host a private gun shows where one, usually a friend or family member, evades a background check, thus the private seller makes easier cash as well as making it easier to obtain a gun.

A great example of slipping through a background check is the Charleston Church shooter, Dylann Roof. Despite failing a background check due to a history of substance abuse, Roof managed to obtain a handgun. The FBI did not receive his background check in time which allowed Roof to kill nine and injure one church attendees with a Glock.

America not only glorifies guns but also glorifies a racially divided nation. Gun control has a history of being presented in the form of prejudice, targeting Black minorities. One example is the Mulford Act that targeted the Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party, who resided in Oakland, California, patrolled their neighborhood by practicing their right to publicly carry a firearm. This was act was efficient in protecting the areas they occupied. However, it did not bode well to the government who viewed the Black Panthers, or any seemingly power Black person, a threat. In an act to strain the Black Panther’s power, California Governor Ronald Reagan passed the Mulford Act. The Black Panthers protested this unfair bill by marching to the Capitol with loaded guns. Unfortunately, this did not help prevent their right to bear arms from being usurped.

How Gun Control correlates with gun violence (in metropolitan areas):
The basis of gun control is to prevent someone who should not have a gun from obtaining one to curtail gun violence, right? This may be true to an extent. For example, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act prevented 2.1 million purchases from 1994 to 2014. An estimation of those preventions were given to one million people who had a criminal history.

Studies show states with stricter gun control have fewer cases of gun violence. This includes both city and rural states (this article with however focus mostly on metropolitan terrain). New York State is considered strict with gun ownership. For instance, carrying a handgun in the open is forbidden and purchasing assault rifles is prohibited. In 2019, NYC’s crime rate reached a record low of an estimate of 95000 incidents.

California is considered to be the state with that house the toughest gun restrictions out of any state. To manufacture, sell or obtain a gun requires 5-year Firearm Safety Certificate along with a monitored written test. If there is any violation of a firearm in the state of California, one can receive a 10 year ban. On a federal level, it can also result in a lifetime gun ban. In 2019, the crime rate in California decreased from the previous year to 2272 per 1000 residents. Can control work? Yes. But there is still a lot of work to be done.

Unit #2- Rough Draft

Why is sexual harassment still a problem ? ,What is the percentage of sexual harassment ? or if people are really inform on what is sexual harassment? This questions go throw my mind every time because nowadays this problem it has become too common around the world and it makes me believe that people are not inform or there’s is not enough awareness to people be aware of this problem is serious thing that people suffer from and they can get a bad trauma from it. Many people can suffer from sexual harassment for example men and woman but must of the cases are more to the lady’s and they can suffer this harassment in their everyday life which it makes it worse and it’s happening in regular places that shouldn’t be happening for example workplaces, school or even at home.Im doing this article because I want a change in this society for a better future and making this article I really hope to make a change and more people become more realize that sexual harassment its getting worse than before and with this social media we can make it happen or ether make this situation even worse than it is now.

In my opinion this topic should be talk more for the reason people should be able to realize if someone is in danger or are suffering from harassment in any place for example I did my research about sexual harassment during this research I was trying to see what came up in the internet I find some interesting websites saying if u need help contact us or if u need a lawyer and bunch of stuff like to fight back but legally or in court but the fighting back doesn’t start from there because those that are being assault or harassment  not only suffer psychically they also suffer mentally and the are more affected mentally because they start thinking they are all along and there’s no one to the rescue ; while looking for good website I stumble in a website that caught my eye and when I was reading it seems really help in a way that it explain and shows different way of harassment also there’s was a quote from that it made me go deeper in this topic and the quote is “According to a 2016 study by the EEOC, around 75% of people who experience workplace harassment fail to bring it up with a manager, supervisor, or union representative. One major reason is that employees fear that they will be retaliated against at work. However, another possible reason for underreporting is that employees who are subjected to inappropriate behavior aren’t clear on when it crosses the line into illegal harassment.” This whole sentence is really important because it’s saying that there’s a lot of people being afraid of speaking about this harassment  because they scare of being retaliated from their job, this is sad to hear because its like blaming a person for something they never try to do but they still suffer from it.

According to Pix 11 news “NEW YORK — Close to half of all women in New York State are victims of sexual harassment, according to a new survey, but many women in the workplace were not surprised.” This shows that even women from NYC are aware of this problem but it’s at a point in which they aware but there’s no change in society they ignoring the fact that they got to survive in a place were is no justice and they are living afraid of going to work or going out they are constantly fear.

This shows how irrelevant is sexual harassment in NYC but imagine how is in other countries , I am afraid of what can happen in a future seen in  what’s going on in today society and really want to make a change because I grew up around women and seeing them suffer from such a horribly way its sad and I have a little sister , I don’t want her to go throw that pain and being a afraid to tell her own family what’s is going on in her life and this harassment can really damage someone’s mentality and in some cases can go really far to points were those people that are in pain can commit suicide.

To be more in details sexual harassment can bring different ways of impacts in victims for example based on the article by Castronovo & McKinney, LLC. “While it’s heartening to see this issue receive more attention, it’s not the full story. As a matter of fact, much of the focus is unfairly devoted to the perpetrators. Big names, famous entertainers, and powerful congressmen are grabbing the spotlight. What’s often overlooked is how their actions have impacted the employees they have harassed.” They example of how victims of sexual harassment are affected as for in their societal, Psychological, emotional/personal and financial. This can tell us how hard it can affected someones everyday life at point its kind of hard to imagine how someone is going throw that and not take about it.

To review and conclude my paper We should put more attention to sexual harassment or any type of harassment or abuse because it’s becoming to regular in this society and by time it’s getting worse in which people are less inform or less interest in this topic. It’s time for a change and we can still change before there’s nothing we can do about it.  This problem has begun from a lot of years now and is still a severe problem not only for one gender but for both and it’s happening to young kids and its going affected their mental health and they also can become the people that harass others as revenge from what happen to then. My goal is to provide people with enough evidence or information to show them how bad sexual harassment is getting and look for those victims to help them and create a better society for the future.

The darker side of fast fashion

The darker side of fast fashion

Most people like to look good and wear tranding clothing. I’m one of those people  because the way that I look is part of my identity. Fashion is important in our  life because we can express ourselves with the clothes we wear.

Fast fashion plays a good game in our life because it is about making trendy clothes quick, cheap, and disposable. With that being said people are able to archive to get the clothing they want because Fast fashion is a replica with less quality of the clothes that the clothing brands have. The way that fast fashion gets the clothing is with several retailers that are able to look at the runways and make garments really quickly. Most of the people buy from fast fashion brands and they don’t even know. During the past years this has been a big problem for the workers’ environment, other good clothing brands and the pollution that is causing the earth planet.

Not everything is beautiful as it appears. According to a fashion historian Tim Gunn,  “Fast fashion is also about, when we say fast it’s not gonna last very long.” What it means is that fast fashion clothing is really sheep and it’s clothing that doesn’t have any quality and that’s why it is not gonna last longer than others. Some examples of fast fashion stores and most of them exist online not in person is Shein.com and in the year 2020 it  had a 121% of the fastest growing fast fashion retailer website in the United states. This’s according to statista, Remwe.com as the second one and Zara.com as the third one. What this means is that a lot of people buy from these stores. This also shows that the stores that sell clothing of quality they dont sell a lot of clothes. This Is because people can get the same clothing for a cheap price.  The way of thinking is that most women don’t like to repeat a piece of  clothing. They just focus on the outfit or what is trading on social media. Also this makes the opportunity for people to dress as their favorite influencers. Fast fashion makes replicas with the purpose of selling these clothing. For example Kim Kardashion wears a dress for her birthday in less than 24 hours and fashion nova have the same dress. Kim kardashion has thousands of followers on social media. A lot of people will definitely buy that dress. In 1980 the average of american that bought 12 new clothes every year. But nowadays they buy  68 clothing  every year. This is relevant because the amount of clothing that people buy has changed because of all fast fashion stores that we have nowadays.

People buy from fast fashion stores and don’t even know the working condition of the factory that these companies make the clothing.  One reason why fast fashion is a problem most of our clothes are made in places where worker’s rights are nonexistent, it shows that the terrible working condition in the factory, most of our clothes are made in places where worker’s rights are nonexistent, it tells us that most of the clothes we wear are made in countries where the rights of citizens are limited. This is important because we have to be aware of what we buy and where the clothes we buy come from. The amount of hours that people work in manufacturing countries is fourteen to sixteen hours per day and they work the seven days of the week. The total amount of hours that they made is around 96 hours per week.  And since that was not enough, the salary is very minimal “ So in summary, these brands are bragging about paying their employees 5 times less than what a person actually needs to live with dignity.” What this demonstrates is that the salary that they pay for those poor people is a pittance compared to what those people work for. This also demonstrated that the salary is so low that they don’t live well. The low price of fast fashion clothing  has this cost. That’s the reason why the prices are so low. Another reason is that  “168 million children in the world are forced to work.” and this happens through the Fashion industry. This is very important because people have to be aware of what is happening in the world and be informed. In particular I didn’t have the slightest idea of what was happening until I started doing this article.

We are hurting our planet without even knowing. According to Rachel Brow,  each american in the United States throws away 7 million towns of clothing but in the past 20 years this number has doubled to 14 million tons. This is important because most of the people are throwing away all this clothes and only wearing them. “In 2015, textile production created more greenhouse gases than international flights and maritime shipping combined.”   This is very important because the clothes that we put on are doing more damage than the flights that came. The real problem is the fabrics of the clothes are made from.  Only to make the cotton grow to make a jacket takes 10,330 liters of water, and this is equal to 24 years of drinking water for one person.   This is very important because most of these clothes end up in landfills and this is a waste of materials. Imagine all the sacrifice and the worker’s condition that the employee makes to make a piece of clothing to end it up in the landfills.

A solution for this problem is that we should recycle our clothing or sell it. One way that we can sell our used clothing is to download the Poshmark app and start selling the clothes you no longer wear. This is a very good idea instead of throwing out your clothes. Most of the dresses that I am selling in my store I only wore them once for a special occasion and you can also do the same. It can be any type of clothing adults and children. An efficient way to sell it faster is by posting it on social networks. This page sells clothes that are used and people them much cheaper than the original price. The price you have is with shipping included.  In conclusion we should consent  for people who constantly buy clothes. We had no information base on how and where the clothes are made or the working conditions that the workers undergo. And when we buy these clothes what we do is support the factories that agree to all inhumane working conditions and the damage that is causing to the earth.
