I am very interested in becoming an event planner at a hotel or one day owning my own catering hall.  I found this article to be very helpful and motivating.  One of the best tips I learned is to build a structure. When I took Professor Bear-Dallis’s event planning class last semester I remember her saying how important it is to write everything down, have a written plan, timetable and schedule which is part of building your structure. Know your client is real important tip.  Listening to your clients wants and understand what the mission of the event is will help you join forces together to build that relationship with your client.  Another great tip in this article is Build your body of work.  In order for you to gain experience in this field is to volunteer at events or attend events to discover the latest trends in the field.

Thanks for sharing this. Now I am more excited to take the event management class in Fall. I totally agree, details is everything and the only way we never forget is putting it in script. Building our way to success is a life long process. I like how the article mention finding the purpose, building a structure, and having strong ethic will get you closer to what you want. If we know the meaning of “why” we choose the path we go, rather that we enjoy it or we have the passion for it….I believe we are half way there. If we dream about it and know the reason why we choose our field of interest we are half way there to success. Then by having an on going plan and revising it, we can plan our way to accomplishment. Lastly, I really think if we have a strong mindset and put it to action success will come along.

Carine thanks for posting this article, I was hooked even before I read the first essential.
By the time I read “Focusing on service in all of your decisions will steer you in the right direction. Detailed service puts your guests at ease so that they are free to enjoy themselves and experience what you have created. Your commitment to service strengthens your relationship with your client and their trust in you.” I had already made my mind. I am buying her book – Passion To Create: Your Invitation To Celebrate.
Matter of fact I already know this about the book:-
“In 1990, in a 1-bedroom apartment in Santa Monica, California, an aspiring actress from Northern Canada, in need of her proverbial “day job,” started a part-time, one-woman party planning company with a Smith-Corona typewriter, and a fax machine next to her bed. 25 years later, Cheryl Cecchetto is the go-to Special Event producer in Hollywood, inspiring the most original and distinguished celebrations in what should also be known as “The Entertain-ING Capitol of The World.”

    Great article Carline, many thanks
Cheryl Cecchetto is a big deal in the event planning business. Her experience and work ethics are unparalleled, that’s why she is well respected and Sequoia productions is so successful offering services well beyond a typical event planning business like: foreign/international events, live shows, professional consultations and brand integration for business events and celebrations.
I definitely agree with her that you need to be a person that really has a passion for event planning and understand that this is a very detailed oriented and be a n organized individual with high ethical standards. I like what she said about service being the backbone of this job and provides a feeling of security and trust to guests.
Finding a purpose and forging relationships was also an enlightened thought along with positive creativity and the need to make decisions and find solutions on the spot when problems happen. Knowing your clients and being on top of new trends and technology is a must and being an innovator taking risks too.
