The two assignments in which I have chosen to talk about in order to demonstrate my growth as both a writer and a student is one of the very first minor assignments we have ever received for this course titled “Introduction to Discourse Communities.” The second assignment that I feel demonstrated my development over time was one of our last assignments titled “Reflecting on the research process”. In my opinion, these two assignments mark an extremely critical point in my growth as a writer and a student from this class. The reason as to why is because in my discourse community assignment I did indeed have quite the struggle. I didn’t really understand fully the concept of a discourse community because the idea I had in my head from reading the reference material was different from the assignment. I also struggled because I was intimidated by the essay writing process due to a previous professor being pretty strict. Luckily, I overcame my issues with writing over time and I believe this is reflected in the assignment “Reflecting on the research process.” In that assignment, I was able to articulate my thoughts well and doing the assignment came fairly easy for me. Through the assignment, I was able to properly explain my research process as well as display what I learned throughout my research. I want to include this assignment in my final portfolio because I believe the confidence in my writing between the two assignments are as distinguishable as night and day.

Make sure you reflect on the two pieces you pick as well as all the major Unit Assignments. Why do you think there was a change? What did you learn or do differently that lead to your change as a writer?
