Wollstonecraft is writing this letter to Defend the women of France. She is trying to inform the former bishop of Autun that women are being taken advantage of by men pleasing them with Voluptuary pleasure. This is stated when Wollstonecraft says, “that in France the very essence of sensuality has been extracted for the pleasure of voluptuary”. By claiming these men are trying to take control over women by the use of money. Wollstonecraft sees this as a problem because young children are growing up with these values which are not right. This is conveyed when she says, “when various causes have produced unnatural and corrupt manners that infect even the young. “Wollstonecraft sees that this can be dangerous for the coming generation as women are being treated as something men can buy. The author uses the mistreatment of women to convey that men are not being thought of with manners and morals as they should have been thought as they grew up. The Discourse community that Wollstonecraft identifies is that of the community that is trying to change the perspective of women in the eyes of a man.  As Wollstonecraft writes this, she conveys that she is a part of this community while M. Talleyrand-Perigord, the former Bishop of Autun does not see this as a problem.
