Mary Wollenstonecraft goal of writing this letter is to highlight and voice the inequalities of women. Mary strongly states that women don’t have the same rights as men, even in regard to their education. She wrote this letter to the former French Bishop for the exact purpose of demonstrating why it is important that women receive the same equal social standards as men. Mary is also identifying the issue that women don’t get to make their own decisions and they’re never given the rights to even express themselves freely as men are. Women are forced to succumb to the social roles of society and give in to being treated inferior to men even despite the work they put in and contribute to society. Wollencraft sees these issues as problems because like she stated “how can woman be expected to cooperate if she doesn’t know why she ought to be virtuous?” This implies that men expect women to act a certain way when women are always limited in what they can and can’t do.  She also defends this when she says “sense and modesty secure her the friendship of her husband.” This proves and emphasize that unlike men, women are restricted and forced to live by the roles given to them by society, causing them the lack of experience in the outside world, forcing them to only have relations with their husbands. Mary also goes on to defend that if women don’t get the rights and equality that they seek then eventually they’re going to seek the power they are being withheld from on their own. She says “If women aren’t permitted to enjoy legitimate rights, they will seek illicit privileges in ways that make both men and themselves vicious”. Wollstone discourse community is the same as the one she is writing for, the women in France. The recipient  is part of a group outside of Wollstones seeing that this letter was written in response of the former Bishops pamphlet.
