Read Olivarez and Hobson texts

·       Annotate each text online, in a printed hard copy, or in a notebook. Attach a photo or screenshot of a favorite section of your notes OR copy and paste the favorite section into your response. In your accompanying post, explain what you found interesting about this section or quote.

·       Think about Olivarez’s and Hobson’s texts. What are some CHOICES they make in their writing? Who do you think they are writing FOR (who is their intended audience)?

·       Watch 2019 LAF student video on Olivarez. Share any response you have to the student comments. Can you relate to something a fellow City Tech student articulated?

  • What does President Obama articulate is the goal of his writing? Do you think he achieves this goal in the excerpt? Why/why not?

Engaging with secondary sources; annotated bibliography and research methods discussion; genre awareness continued

·      Read Lewis’s editorial and watch his CCNY speech. What is important about his life story? What does he mean by good trouble? Choose 2 quotes, from his speech and/or editorial, that resonate with you. Copy and paste them and explain why you find them meaningful. Do you think you have ever pursued, or wanted to pursue, good trouble in your own life? Explain.

·       Write a brief (1 paragraph) letter to our class about your proposed topic for Unit 2: what it is, why you’re interested in it, what you think or know about it already, and some potential questions you have.

·       At the end, include a preliminary list of sources in different genres that you plan to consult

·       Respond to two of your colleagues’ proposals. (how to narrow down topic, possible source suggestion, something you find cool or interesting about the proposal).

·       Revise Unit 1 essay with feedback from Professor, peer review partner, and Margo

Unit 3: Genre Determination (Good Trouble: From the Classroom to the Community)

·       Read Correal’s text. Summarize 4-5 main ideas in a paragraph. Then consider her use of photographs. Choose two photos to describe and analyze: what is going on in the photo, and why does Correal include it in her article? What does the photo illustrate? Finally, think about the *genre* of Correal’s article. Why is this genre most suitable for her story?·

·       Write a 1-paragraph proposal for your Unit 3 Project and share on OpenLab. Include which genre and writing style best suit your project, and your intended audience

·       Read classmates’ posts and respond to 2 with your thoughts:  What do you find interesting about their topic? What do you want to know more about? Can you recommend a specific publication or website you think the author could write for? Which genre could you imagine working well for this project? Is there something useful you could share about your own media consumption habits?
