one way you could do it is to go to the Layers panel and go down and click the adjustment layer type button. It looks like a half-moon icon, After click the new adjustment layer and click the layer options.
you can also make a layer that only aplys to the layer underneath by applying a clipping mask. You can do this by right-clicking the adjustment layer and then creating a clipping mask. That way only that layer could be altered.

To create an adjustment layer in Adobe Photoshop, go to the top of the panel of the program. You go to Windows dropdown and click on Layers. Using the layers panel, you can create adjustments for each selected layer. To do this, without leaving the layers panel, click on the layer you want to adjust with the left button on the mouse. Then in the same layer panel on the bottom, you see the circle divided into two halves – black and white colors. The purpose of it is to create a new fill or adjustment layer. You can adjust your layers by adding a solid color, gradient, or pattern. Also, adjust brightness, contrast levels, curves, exposure, hue and saturation, color balance, vibrance, black and white, add a filter, invert, posterize, and more choices of adjustments.
If you click on a solid color, the color of the selected layer will be filled with the color that you chose from the color picker. You can also add gradients and patterns to the selected layer and modify them. If you decide to change the hue and saturation, you can control these levels using the sliders in the panel settings. You can make the layer black and white, add a photo filter such as cold or warm.

To apply an adjustment layer only to the underlying layer in Adobe Photoshop, you need to create it first, as I described earlier. Then, in the layers panel, left-clicking on the adjustment layer, thereby selecting it, and then clicking on the alt button, you will see a small black arrow with a white square nearby it. After clicking the arrow and holding alt together, you will notice that the adjustment has been applied to the layer below, and this process is called creating a clipping mask.

    – First, you would go to the Layers panel and make sure to go down and click the adjustment layer type button. It should look like a half-moon icon. After that click the new adjustment layer and click the layer options. After selected click Okay. Don’t forget to name your layers!!

There are two ways you can only apply to the layer beneath. The first one would be to apply a clipping mask. You would do that by right-clicking the adjustment layer and then creating a clipping mask. That way only that layer could be altered. Or you could do it a second way which is holding the alt-key and right-clicking again in between your adjustment layer. You can always find the layers in the layer panel. It would be easier to name your layers because sometimes if you have too many layers it can be confusing on which adjustment layer you want to alter.

Nice that you mentioned two ways to create a Clipping Mask, and I completely forgot that there are two of them.

    Creating adjustment layers
An adjustment layer is an adjustment to a layer’s properties. To adjust a layer, select a layer first. Then, click on the icon that is a half-circle and choose an adjustment you like.

There are some adjustments that I would like to cover in this paragraph.

The hue/saturation adjustment allows you to adjust the hue of a layer. The hue/saturation settings appear in the properties tab. Checking the colorize box takes color directly from the hue.

The solid color adjustment adds solid color to the layer.

The gradient adjustment adds a gradient to the layer. Double-clicking on the gradient fill layer opens the gradient fill menu. In this menu, you can change the level of gradient, change the direction of the gradient, reverse the gradient, etc.

The pattern adjustment allows you to add a pattern to the layer. Double-clicking the pattern layer opens the pattern fill menu. From there, you can change the pattern, change the angle of the pattern, change the scale of the pattern, etc.

The vibrance adjustment allows you to change the vibrance and saturation of a layer.
The invert adjustment allows you to invert the colors of a layer.

The black and white adjustment allows you to turn a layer’s color into black and white. You can change the color values in the properties tab.

The photo filter adjustment adds a color filter on top of the layer. You can change the color and density in the properties tab.

Adjustment layer only on a single layer
To apply an adjustment layer only on a single layer, hold the alt key and click in between the adjustment layer and the layer in the layers tab. To undo this action, hold alt key and click in between the adjustment and layer in the layers tab.
