Following are two versions of the text for the Citytech mission statement for your consideration.
The first version of the mission statement was provided by Barbara Burke from the Office of Sponsored Programs. This text may be considered a more streamlined version of the mission statement that was previously created by the college strategic planning committee.
The second version is a further revision provided by the personnel committee. It revises and builds upon the aforementioned version and emphasizes an alignment with CUNY’s general mission.
These two versions are provided for your review and comments.
Sincerely,
Marco Castillo

Version 1.
At New York City College of Technology, we are committed to providing broad access to high quality technological and professional education for the diverse populations of New York City. A distinctive emphasis on applied skills and place-based learning built upon a vibrant general education foundation equips students with both problem-solving skills and an understanding of the social contexts of technology that make our graduates competitive in the 21st century economy. Interdisciplinary learning and opportunities for creative collaboration are hallmarks of our academic programs. We strive to create an atmosphere of inclusion, respect, and open-mindedness in which all members of our community can flourish.
Version 2.
New York City College of Technology, a comprehensive college in the City University of New York (CUNY), is committed to CUNY’s mission. The College is committed to providing broad access to high quality technological and professional education for its diverse population of students. Emphasis on understanding of technology, applied skills, and problem-solving abilities built upon a general education foundation make our graduates competitive in the 21st century economy. We strive for an atmosphere of inclusion, respect, and open-mindedness in which all members of our community can flourish.
I prefer the wording of version 1 – in particular the inclusion of interdisciplinary leaning.
I also prefer version one, though I also like the inclusion of CUNY in version two. Perhaps we could slightly change the wording of the first sentence in version one:
“At New York City College of Technology, City University of New York, we are committed to providing broad access to high quality technological and professional education for the diverse populations of New York City.”
