As a child I would say Amy encountered hardships and difficulties due to language being a barrier between her and her mother. As Amy grew up with certain ideals or even believing that her mother didn’t meet certain criteria to be able to speak english that was considered “good”. This had impacted not only their relationship but her reason as to why she became devoted to improving her situation. This didn’t happen overnight for Amy but she realized she wasn’t alone. It was also difficult for Amy to achieve good scores within english related classes. Being able to have no one to turn to for guidance and yet alone being turned down in college also. All these only build Amy’s motive to reach higher standards. Her main motive seemed to be fighting against a stereotype that she was depicted by just where she comes from.
