To-Do Before Class

  • If you don’t already have them, purchase the required drafting supplies
  • If you were not able to complete them in class, post comments to Introduction post, sign the Academic Integrity Pledge and complete the Pre-Reading and Drawings Assessment
  • Reading 1 
    • Refer to the reading list on the ARCH 1231 Course Hub for specific pages
    • Submit scanned + formatted Reading Notes+ Sketches
    • In addition to your notes + sketches, be sure to reflect on and answer the following questions: 
      • How does the book define architecture? 
      • How does that compare / contrast with my own understanding of architecture?
    • Due Friday 9/9, 12pm to Miro
  • Visit Federal Hall
    • Take in the space
      • Sketch + take pictures
        • These will help you when you’re drawing the building later
      • Try to understand how the building is supported
        • What are the main structural elements? Walls? Columns? Both?
    • Post one sketch from your visit and a selfie of you in front of the building by Friday 9/9, 12pm to Miro
  • Module I: Case Study Order and Geometry Diagram
    • Study the first floor plan of Federal Hall
    • On the Miro board, produce a diagram breaking the floor plan down into its key geometric forms
      • This is just a first pass, so experimentation is encouraged!
    • Due Friday 9/9, 12pm to Miro

    • In addition to your notes + sketches, identify the following and be ready to discuss next class: How many means of egress do I have access to in my house? 
      • Where are they, and how do I access them?
    • Sketch out a plan of your home showing how you would exit the building in case of an emergency. If you live in an apartment building, show the path from your apartment door all the way to the outside of the building, not the inside of your own apartment.
      • Keep in mind that most buildings should have at least 2 means of egress.
    • Due Friday 9/16, 12pm to Miro
  • Module I: Case Study Building – Plan Geometry Diagram
    • Finish final plan geometry diagram, drawn to scale
    • Due Friday 9/16, 12pm to Miro
