Madeleine Morley explains clarify the main reasons for the absence of African Americans in the history of graphic design. Madeleine explains how the suppression of African Americans in the past and now might affect future graphic designers and artists.

A hypothesis can be sized up as the lack of opportunities presented to African-American designers. Joel Towers also believes that there is a lack of black role models in the industry, which discourages black students from considering this career path.

Typography as a Radical Act in an Industry Ever-dominated by White Men explores how dominant white fellows were back in the days in the design and typographic industry, and how a young black designer created a new movement to push more artists of color into the industry.

Design Gets More Diverse by Alice Rawsthorn. People of color have to work ten times harder than the other majority to get a scholarship or even to keep it.

Different ethnic backgrounds are emerging in the design field, also creating a uniqueness, cultural taste, color and combination to bring more versatile aesthetic value.

There are artists like us who have come from different countries to create something possible in graphic design. Some People have negativity about African-Americans who had to create some designs of their culture have enthusiasm and beauty. Therefore, black history has gotten stronger. People have forgotten thinking is not important. Every designer trying to fight back to identify their culture, many African-Americans will never give up their talent, no matter how far others may have tried to push them down.
In the article, “Celebrating the African-American Practitioners Absent From Way Too Many Classroom Lectures”. This explains many African-American artists had created impossible artwork for many years and others didn’t interest at all. One of the interesting quotes some white cultures won’t appreciate the African culture, “as a handful of African-American designers seemed exempt from the model is an influence which maybe because they didn’t work in advertising or commercial.” This explains that some of the white cultures are saying that African-Americans who are designers have not educated enough.
Jerome Harris speaks about “Dethroning of Absolute” working by African-Americans graphic designers seeking questions to inspire active and challenged to design the community culture research history. The show at MICA presents printed ephemera from history. Harris spokes about designs and educators to create exhibit concepts and concern to select five dividual’s objects. While Harris was in grad school, he had to complete his research project life of work that was his choice of design. How is this site to create and use buddy Esquire as the party designer of hip-hop culture? Some designs were incomplete to research is hard to find in a year?
Harris researches black history art because it’s important that way designers who were African-Americans didn’t talk about that we’re legends. Speaking of modeling techniques and graphic design had become enthusiasm. Buddy Esquire and Phase 2, were taught to experience their graphic design and had become graffiti writers even W.E.B. DeBois wanted to make infographics and he did with no training at all.
Another article related topography as a radical act in the interest he ever dominated by white men. Tré Seals wanted to change the history of letters’ fonts as cultural objects. Seals had created vocal type creating typefaces to put website history into significant backstories in 2016. The topography is notorious for racial homogeneity. They were two ways to design fonts that are not from the tech as design. They represent the typeface of racial discrimination to bring peace, such as Honoring The King’s: End of Racism and Union Justice, those present two males who are different cultures white and black showing both posters in photography. A woman artist is an African-American showing design of culture using tools of knowledge to create a powerful topography vocal types fonts platform are radical act, not because they are different it’s the political act.
Every history of graphic design culture it had become stronger trying to identify for their identities and how I freaking Americans did not give up their dreams to become graphic designers learning in black history are there are not along they had survived the important pieces had collected in their studies research had become better people.

The influence and new creations of design have always seemed to be introduced by white Designers. Reading “Celebrating the African-American Practitioners Absent From Way Too Many Classroom Lectures” I’ve come to the same conclusion as Jerome Harris. Many students haven’t been educated as much about African American designers and how they have taken design to another level. Moreover, I’ve heard more about astonishing French designers or white designers in general. We’re so used to hearing about well-educated designers or even those with well-known background history, but what about those who’ve struggled to become recognized? And for those who didn’t receive any formal education and had to self-teach themselves through the basic essentials. Commercial Design has changed its direction nowadays because we have been given the liberty to create art, technology has helped us advance to design, promote and grow. The concept of design has grown in diversity, as JeromeReading Response 6 – Your Initials stated “ the inclusion of more women and people of color would severely shift the understanding of the field, and how people see themselves as practitioners” not only will be introduced to new design but it’ll educate the upcoming generations with all sorts of design from diverse designers.

In commercial design, there is not much diversity regarding the recognition of designers. Most of the designers students learn about are white European men. In the reading by Madeleine Morley, she poses the question “What would happen if we made graphic design history more equitable, including designers from more than just European and -rarely- Asian decent?” If graphic design history was more fair, there would be so much more inspiration and knowledge to be gained. It would also shine a light on new perspectives that could have brought endless possibilities. By having designs that are produced from creators who have experienced many similar things, it is kind of unamusing since it lacks diversity. There are many other different designers who have gone through their own mess, which can be relatable or inspiring to a certain group that’s not recognized as much. Some examples would be African American, women and LGBTQ members. By acknowledging different people, there’s a higher risk of getting others to be involved, which is what one would want in the design field. In the reading by Silas Munro, he states “… created typefaces like Carrie, a Sans serif that honors women’s suffrage movement in Argentina, and Stonewall to recognize the LGBTQ 1969 riots…” In design there’s much more that meet the eye than just art, its history. He is honoring the struggles that these people have gone through to get to where they want to be. In the next twenty years, I think there will be more distinct recognition of people and movements. There will be more historical connections with design, which would help spread awareness.

Design Gets More Diverse by Alice Rawsthorn, NYTimes, 2011

Design industries, like many other industries, face issues of racism or discrimination. Many people of another race or gender can feel boxed out and ignored. They feel this way because who they are and what they have done is simply not being recognized. This causes them to be ignored in design or other industries. This causes their stories to be untold until someone finally looks at them. I was looking at the reading by Madeleine Morley where they were talking about their research into African designers. The talk about how there was little information about them made their research very difficult. This shows how when we don’t give attention to diversity in design or other fields, it will simply be ignored and forgotten. This is why it is important to have diversity in not just design but other industries as well.
Diversity in design is a very important thing to have, and I think there are many ways to have it become part of design. One way is to teach design students about diverse designers who are less well-known or are ignored. This can designers from all over the world, not just in America. Many great designers do not get the same recognition that others do. The designers don’t receive this recognition for a lot of reasons, whether it be because of their race, their financial situation, or even what they believe. This causes their work to be forgotten or simply go unnoticed. This will allow even more diverse styles to be introduced into the design. It will also give these designers more reignition. It will also allow diverse designers to gain a voice and be able to spread their views about themselves and their beliefs to more people. As stated in the reading by Alice Rawsthorn “designers are defining their own approaches, which are influencing their peers elsewhere.” This helps to prove my point by shining a light on more diverse designers. It allows others to learn from them and create a wider range of designs.
I believe that in 20 years, design will have evolved greatly. I believe it would have introduced new styles of design. From how everything is structured to how it is used in the design piece. This is because as the world changes, so does design to reflect, the change in the world. As shown in the reading by Silas Munro who talked about how they introduced diversity into typography. How they changed the structure and style of type to reflect a more diverse voice This shows how design changes along with the world it is in. I believe how design is done would have changed as well. As shown through history, as technology evolves, the way design is made changes along with it. Finally, typography would have changed as well, showing new fonts and font styles that reflect, the change in design. Design history would have also changed, introducing more designers and art periods that have come and gone. There could also be lesser-known designers from the past who could be added to design history. This is because there are many parts of history that we are only just discovering, and the same could be said about design. This is why design is important because it is something that is always changing alongside the human race.

Research Paper 6 – KR

Through the time we have been progressing as human beings and we have made laws that make us equal. And this is not only in the political view but in the graphic design field as well. We went from having only white people creating popular designs to anyone who can make designs that stand out and have meaning. We have changed the commercial design field in a big way by letting different cultures show their art. Also, we celebrate those cultures, this allows people to learn about them and their history. From now to the future, I don’t see the commercial design field and the study of design history changing at all. The reason is that we have already made this change already, we as a society and as graphic designers have changed our views and allowed many cultures in this world of design.

For me, diversity in design is important because having a wide variety of perspectives at the table throughout the design process allows us to design more inclusive experiences for a broader audience. As designers, how do we ensure a diverse group of colleagues that will constantly surround us, and organically, challenge our assumptions about the very little we know about the world? If you are creating presentations, reports, or other materials to help you communicate inside your organization, taking diversity, inclusion and equity into account can help you better express care and concern for all teammates and increase trust, collaboration and even innovation. For me, diversity in design means diversity of experience, perspective, and creativity—otherwise known as diversity of thought—and multiple factors, including race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual identity, ability/disability, can shape these. By being more aware of our environment, we can be more inclusive in our surroundings and how we treat each other. Overall, diversity and inclusion in design can encourage greater understanding between different user groups, contributing to a better experience for everyone. Design is a powerful tool that has both empowered and destroyed communities. By gaining insight into our culture’s values, we are more able to understand how they perceive certain design elements (e.g., colors, symbols). There are many cultural dimensions that influence these perceptions, which influence our decision-making as well.

Design generally is a massive industry that should welcome all kinds of people, no matter of race, gender, sexuality or religious background. Despite this, there is an ignorable fact that African American designers have been getting the short end of the stick. A theory that I have is that there is a lack of design opportunities presented to them, making an interest in this field almost non-existent. Joel Towers seems to have a similar thought, stating, “Mr. Towers blames the scarcity of arts education in U.S. public schools, and poor perceptions of careers in art and design… He believes that African-American students, even those from affluent backgrounds, are also discouraged by the dearth of black role models.” However, even when this shortcoming is conquered, successful African American designers still face some form of prejudice. Every designer has different experiences. Some might not even face any form of prejudice while in this field of work, like artist Stephen Burks, but that doesn’t change the negative experiences that many other designers have faced. In his quote, he brings up the lack of black role models in the industry which can implement hesitation in the minds of young, inspiring black designers. This can be very unmotivating as it sends a negative message that for African Americans to achieve that top position is unlikely compared to white designers.

With the advancement of digital technology, people from different cultural backgrounds are emerging with contrasting designs, giving birth to new and fresh faces around the design field. But this is only the start. To bring about a change in the commercial design field, we must dig deeper. I think some steps the design industry can take are to make initiatives towards diverse representation in design firms, starting from the top. This allows minority designers and students to see someone who represents them in a senior role in firms, someone that they can look at and aspire to be. If diversity isn’t present, then minority people will be less motivated to work in that field. Hopefully, through hard work, perseverance, and addressing this issue straight-forward, we can recognize that there is a problem in this field regarding diversity and that it needs to be handled. By addressing it we are paving a way for future minority students and designers looking to work and be successful in this field. They will see more people like them in senior positions and will aspire to be as successful as them.

In the first article Celebrating the African-American Practitioners Absent From Way Too Many Classroom Lectures by Madeleine Morley, we can see and understand the main reason why African-Americans are so absent in the history of graphic design. She explains and analysis some of the reasons for this too had happened. Back when graphic design and art itself was becoming more and more popular African Americans were kept away from it and with the passing years, this still kept happening.  White folks had the advantage to go to art schools and explore the arts and crafts without having to worry about anything because they had the wealth and the social class to do so. This prevented African American and another large minority to be absent from the books of the history of graphic design. Only white European folks were the ones being future and portrayed on these books and I think this somewhat might affect future graphic designers and artists by influencing the idea that they might not be Successful because there is one that sounds or looks like them on this history books. I believe we must start to change history and not only teach it the past but also teach the present so our students understand that there are people like them right now out there in the world thriving. We must push aside the history of suppression and choose diversity.

In the second reading Typography as a Radical Act in an Industry Ever-dominated by White Men by Silas Munro, we explore how dominant white folks were back in the days in the design and typographic industry. Silas talks about how Holmes-Miller a newly born designer of color, happened to have noticed the same things as Maurice Cherry another person of color in this field, that designers of color like him were almost non-existent and they’ve been noticing this for years.  Back then it was really hard for African Americans to obtain a degree in the arts and not having many or any, in this case, didn’t help them integrate into the industry at all. This was a major step back for designers of color to be part of graphic design history. She also talks about the plan Seal had to create a new movement that would include people of color and diverse backgrounds working in the typography field. I think this was a great thing that happen because this give a platform for people of color to express themselves to the world and create their own type of faces that resemble their history. This was a step further into portraying and pushing more artists of color into the industry making them be seen by the majority.

In the third reading, Design Gets More Diverse by Alice Rawsthorn, we explore how people of color have to work ten times harder than the other majority.  People of color don’t often have the chance to fail and start again or stop and continue later. they are not given the chance but white folks have the money and power to do so. this is why people of color have to work and go to school or have to work 10 times harder to be able to keep that scholarship. There aren’t many designers of color out in the industry nowadays and I feel this is because at the beginning of this era they were being kept away from reaching the industry by preventing them to hired in companies because of the color of their skin or background. I believe that more and more artists and designers of color are emerging due to these new technologies that have been evolving over the years. Technology has been allowing more and more people of color to start creating at their own comfort without being judged or limited and the internet giving them access to show the world their work.
