Responsibility – Shadman Khan

I believe that the gaming industry has a very important role to society. Gaming plays a role in the lives of hundreds of millions. Often it isn’t merely just a hobby to be done during one’s off hours. It has quite realistically become an essential part to one’s life and it has even developed into a career. With the production of a game that delivers something so important to people, comes great responsibility and power. The people in the gaming industry create something that will take the time of millions, so it is their ethical duty to ensure the games meet the criteria of society. They must not create games that support a political or negative motive. Other than that games serve as an escape from reality, a guaranteed feeling of joy. Since someone Is able to create something so amazing, they should long to deliver the best product possible. Something as amazing as a game, will unfortunately always have cons as well. Many of the biggest games in the industry have communities filled with toxic people. These platforms connect individuals with random people, and this can often allow cyberbullying. Games provide a great hunting ground for bullies. The platform can give someone endless people to pick on, and the bullying can get quite severe. Unfortunately people of all ages have even taken their lives because of something as simple as a game. So it is the job of the people managing these platforms to prevent bullying. They should have no tolerance for bullying and make it quite clear in the conditions and terms. There should also be an active system that is able to investigate players that have received multiple complaints for things relating to bullying.  These contributions  to society can quite literally change the lives of the masses for the better. I actually recently got into gaming, and I’ve been dumbfounded at every experience. I’ve found games to be filled with creativity and expression. There is some real talent and genius behind the works of major games. Graphics and resolution are developing at an astounding rate. Games can be so realistic that you’d have trouble telling them apart from real life. This is what interests me the most. The creativity, code, and pure genius behind games. Not any ordinary person is capable of something like this, and the skill behind it is truly astounding.

I agree with when you said “Many of the biggest games in the industry have communities filled with toxic people.” I can say this is true because basketball games such as 2k and shooting games such as black ops, have one of the most toxic community and you can’t really do anything but report them. The only solution that worked for me in the past is reporting them, and Microsoft or Sony can ban them, and that ban can likely make them not do it anymore. Cyberbullying from games do have a impact to people in society because it can unmotivated them, and they might cause themselves physical harm. The only option the gaming industry can do reduce that is simply by just banning people.

And this may be the most important element of “responsibility” with gaming — the potential for cyberbullying. That’s been a problem since the first MMORPGs came online, and, while not minimizing the problem within the email and text platforms, it’s still an issue. I even had a student do a project about introducing people to Fortnite so that they were welcomed and not bullied. This is an area that’s definitely worth investigating!
