It is interesting the multiple ways different kinds of people go about learning. There are various ways that people can process information but not every way is useful. Many learning practices come with varying errors. Reading is one of the most common ways people gather information but some read blindly with no sense of focus of what they are actually reading. The Article, Navigating This Perfect Storm by Ellen C. Carrillo discusses how students read an entire set of text and not identify the key points in said text. When I was going over the prompts for this assignment I was advised to have a pen and paper at hand to jot down any important details from the text. If this wasn’t written in the list of prompt I honestly would of never thought of notes while going over this article.
Ellen makes many convincing points in her article to why google knowledge isn’t an efficient way of digesting key detail from an text. If a student simply searches up an answer they aren’t really learning the content at hand. It does take much thinking to google the theme or central idea of a passage. Ellen goes over five steps to help students properly analyze what they are reading. Firstly, determine what the text explicitly says and make logical. This step creates a strong sense of understanding for the reader. Next, summarize the key supporting details and ideas. By summarizing this helps bring connections made throughout the text. Then, analyze how and why individuals, events, or ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. The reader will became familiar with the reasoning for what specific things occur. After, interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text. As the reader processes through the text they will recognize the importance of each sentence. Lastly, analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text . This will help set a basis for the respond that is given from the reader.
In my school environment the internet has certainly had a impact on my learning experiences. Utilizing the internet for assignments in class was effective but i truly felt it hinder my learning potential.
