Louis Tejada – Food and Coffee in the Civil War

After reading both articles, what I found fascinating about a Civil War soldier’s diet was that the Union soldiers were fed pork or beef which was usually salted and boiled to extend the shelf life. Also, they were given coffee, sugar, salt, vinegar, and sometimes dried fruits and vegetables if they were in season. In addition, many of the soldiers suffered from hunger, illness, and death from unsanitary and poorly cooked food. Another thing I found fascinating was that coffee fueled the war and how it was often the last comfort the soldiers enjoyed before entering battle, and was the first sign of safety for those who survived. Lastly, I found fascinating that hard tack is a type of biscuit made from unleavened flour and water, and was commonly used to stave off hunger on both sides, after it was baked the hard tack was dried to increase its shelf life.

The food that I can’t live without is cereal because I eat it every day for breakfast and its a good source of fiber.

Wen Yong Huang- Food and Coffee in the Civil War

Soldiers are the courageous heroes who brought peace to a country. In the life of the battle, they had experienced many physical and spiritual challenges which many of us had not gone through. Hence, these kind of challenges may decreased the morale in the battle field. After reading the articles, what fascinated me the most was that coffee can lift the army force effectively. When I think of the word ā€œcoffeeā€, the scene of relaxation will come out of my mind immediately from picturing a group of people sitting in the chairs and enjoying this hot beverage that can bring comfort to people and talk about their lives. Clearly, due to effect of the coffee, soldiers rely on coffee as much as their bullets to relive pain and tragedies. Moreover, I also learned that hard tack was another important product that the solider canā€™t live without. Hard tack was known as a cracker which was made of flour, salt and water and it can be store for years and keep people from hungriness for days.

Rice is the food that that I canā€™t live without it because I eat it every day and it mainly provides carbs and protein to my body.

Homework #2: Food and Coffee in the Civil War

If you had a choice, which would you give up? Food? Or coffee? In class, weĀ  looked at the photography of the Civil War and the difficulties of producing photographs during war, especially with the wet-plate collodion process. To help better understand the conditions that photographers worked in, this weekā€™s homework explores what Civil War soldiers ate and their dependence on coffee. The typical food ration for a Union soldier included small amounts of meat, coffee, and hardtack (whatā€™s hardtack? Look here to find out.) The Union side half-jokingly believed coffee helped fuel their soldiers. Meanwhile, the Confederate South suffered vast food shortages due to strong Union blockades, and resorted to unique recipes (called receipts in the 19th century) to produce coffee substitutes.

Read the two links below about cooking on the battlefront and the importance of coffee (the word ā€˜coffeeā€™ appears more frequently than ā€˜rifleā€™ or ā€˜bulletā€™ in Civil War diaries).

Share what you think is most fascinating about a Civil War soldierā€™s diet AND post an image of a food item that you cannot live without. You can link to a photo on the web, or take a picture!

Kimberly Vargas: Who takes selfies?

After analyzing all the data and information gathered from the website selfiecity,Ā I came to the conclusion that women take more selfies than men. Majority of the selfies taken also display happiness and content rather than gloominess. It surprised me, however, to see that New Yorkers don’t take as many selfies as other countries such as Russia or China. It also became evident that New Yorkers aren’t as “satisfied” or happy in comparison to residents of Bangkok. According to the dataset on the website, BangkokĀ women had a larger scale of happy selfies than the rest of the analyzed cities. That goes off to show and further prove the theory that New Yorkers are quite stressed and depressed people. Because of the noise and fast pace of life, we experience distress quite more often. That could serve as an explanation to the findings in my opinion. Overall, I believe the information was quite accurate and it also helped to become more aware of little details like such.

homework#1- who takes selfies?

Selfiecity is a website dedicated in collecting and investigating the style of self portraits in five cities across the world; bangkok, Berlin, Mascow, new york and sao paulo. based on the data shown, bangkok have the youngest age profile out of the other 4 cities. mascow have the most percentage(82.0%) of females taking selfies. sao paulo and bangkok have greater smile distributions then other cities and there are more of female smiles. on average mascow has the least distribution of smiles. people don’t tend to take as much selfies as i thought, only 4% of images were selfies. what i found interesting is when looking at the videos of the selfies, the eyes of each selfie is positioned in the same place.

Hw #1

After exploring through selfiecity, what actually interested me was not the age, gender, or the facial expression that different people made while taking a selfie, maybe a little but not much. However what actually interested me was the way how their team work together to college these selfie dates, specially that final step, where members have to manually double check if the selfie was tagged correctly. What surprised me was that there are approximately only 4% imagine that are actual selfies, I think maybe posting a plate of delicious food might get you more likes on Facebook or Instagram. Lastly according to selfiecity.net New York City’s Men and Women has the oldest average age for taking selfies. I think the reason for that is because New York City is such a busy city, where people do all day is focusing on their work instead of social media or entertainments.

homework#1(selfiecity)

A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a digital camera and smart phone held in the hand or supported by a selfie stick. Selfies are often shared on social networking services such as Facebook, snapchat, and Instagram. After visiting the website, I think Moscow interesting to me. I found interesting on average age, smile, and gender. The data that surprise me is the percentage difference in males compared to females took selfie around the five city. In Moscow around 82% women take selfie. only 18% men take selfie. It is a huge difference. Another data that surprise me is the age average which is around 23. I thought people take more selfie at age 20. The data shows that other cities have more smile then the New York. Bangkok has the highest smiling faces.
