Based on Prof. Qian’s lecture (link), please describe three of the works he covered. Here are some possible approaches to what you can write:
- What elements seem most important?
- Does the image seem balanced or unbalanced? Why?
- How is the artist using color?
- What angle or perspective does the image take?
- How does the artwork make the viewer feel and why?
You can describe the artworks either via a 25-50 word text or a sketch. At least one response needs to be in text form.
For one of the works that interested you the most, please write a 100 word essay using one published resource from the library (it’s ok to use a museum website but we’d prefer a published source). At the end of your essay, provide a MLA citation for your source. We’d like you to get into the “why” of the painting or photograph. Address one of these elements:
- the time of the artwork: what did the Brooklyn Bridge symbolize or represent during the period when the artwork was created?
- what did the artist intend via his or her representation of the Bridge?
- space and geography: how is the artist depicting the Bridge in terms of the skyline and the geography of Brooklyn and Manhattan?
- why is this artwork considered important by the author of the article or book you found?

Although your work is excellent, Wikipedia isn’t a published source. Talk to me if you need to … Prof. Berger

Good work and glad to see you’re comparing the historic place to the contemporary place. It would be helpful if you were more careful in your description of the third photo (Bernice Abbott) to explain that this is the location of the Empire Stores, etc. today but the photo was taken 80 years ago.

good analysis, good source but when quoting, it’s good practice to give the page number from the book or article where you found the quote.
