11/1 Brooklyn Collection

This is not quite an archive but rather a special collection. Highlights will include:

  1. topical clipping files on neighborhoods and sites
  2. the Brooklyn Daily Eagle online (see Research Resources)
  3. old, historic books

I would like you to do one of these two things and prepare a 100 word blog post in the comments. Consider your research question as you select what you analyze and discuss:

  1. Compare two photos or two maps from different time periods. Link to the images in your post. Discuss how the maps show change to your site, neighborhood, or landmark
  2. Discuss one newspaper clipping or book other item you found and how it addresses one of your research questions. Consider the following:
    1. What did you learn?
    2. What other resources might you look for next?
    3. How does the date of the material play into understand your question?

  1. As I investigated and researched information in regards to my research question, I was able to find any interesting new things that actually surprised me. For my research question, I will be investigating what impact did terrorism (9/11 attacks) had on tourism in NYC. Because of this, I tried to find newspaper clippings and articles that would help me see what occurred before and after the 9/11 attacks. One newspaper clipping that did interest me and would be of great use for my paper was a clipping from the Daily News Newspaper which stated how NYC was slowing coming back or recovering after the terrorist attack. I learned how NYC and the government had a positive look at things. They knew that the “tangled steel” in other words the twin towers were gone, but grief and work remain. Although it was hard for the city to continue with their lives, one year after the 9/11 attacks, the city needed to slowly move on. I never knew that it took that long to “recover” emotionally and until the some bodies were still being found and buried. Because of this resource, I might consider looking at more newspaper clippings of that time that relate to the attacks.
At the same time, the date of the newspaper (9/8/2002) is very relevant to my topic and helps me understand my question better in terms as to how long it took NYC to recover.

  2. “The Brooklyn Bridge: A Cultural History” by Richard Haw is a book that I chose because I wanted to learn more about Brooklyn Bridge’s cultural history. I looked through and seen certain chapters that speaks about “Tourism in Nineteenth-Century America”, “Tourist and Guidebooks” and “H.G Wells Looks at American Technology.” I am able to use these resources for my research question because it relates to both tourism and technology. My focus is on the futuristic aspects of advance technology improving tourist attraction, and these chapters convey information of how tourism of the Brooklyn Bridge in the past, so I am able to compare and contrast information about tourism in the past and present.

  3. Thinking in depth about my research question “How has the Brooklyn Bridge changed the development for both Manhattan and the DUMBO area?” I was able to find a very important source although it only focuses on the Brooklyn end of the bridge. The source that I found is very important is a book called “Brooklyn Now and Then” by Marcia Reiss. The book illustrates the comparison between photographs of the Brooklyn and the DUMBO area during the 1865 to 1929, to how the same location looks during present times (2015), which illustrates the major developments that have happened over the years. The time period fits perfectly into my research question because my main focus is to understand what changes (developments) were done and brought to the area due to the addition of the Brooklyn Bridge. The next resource I would look at next would be a similar book that would focus on the Manhattan end of the bridge comparing its past developments to present time.

  4. I chose the newspaper clipping called “Brooklyn’s Boomtown DUMBO’s got it all” by Patrick Gallahue, because i think it relates to my question” How has gentrification changed DUMBO? Is it helping or harming the community and resident of DUMBO ?. It talks about how much DUMBO has changed with all these new stores and buildings coming so fast into the neighborhood. And how the DUMBO Neighborhood Association and residents are happy watching the are grow, but are keeping on eye on over-development. They are concerned about the rapid development will encourage developers to tear down buildings and history that makes DUMBO. The time period of this article fits well into my question because it focuses on the changes of DUMBO. My next resource I would look next is a similar article that focus on the changes of DUMBO.

  5. Searching for a source that gave me some information on how technology has financially affected Brooklyn was difficult, considering most other sources are holding information from further in the past. So, instead of looking for a source that teaches me what new technology is out that helps the economy, I looked for a source with information about Brooklyn before the information age and compared that to what I know about the information age since I am living in it. I came across a book called The Brooklyn Bridge: A Cultural History by Richard Haw. Here I found some information about tourists and the guidebooks that they used during the 19th century. These guidebooks could be rather complicated and even a little intimidating to a new tourist. But, after the start of the information age, these guidebooks became obsolete because of the smart phone. With hundreds of tourism apps, a GPS system, and the ability to take high resolution photos, tourism is easier than ever before. Which increases tourism rates, which brings in more money to Brooklyn’s economy. I would like to find a resource that gives me some information on how social media is affecting tourism rates as well, because tourism is definitely a large financial income that has changed a lot since the start of the information age.

  6. During our visit to the Brooklyn Public Library I looked at a few articles, books and guidebooks as well. My research question, which is “why does Brooklyn Bridge attract many tourists to Brooklyn, and how should you capitalize profits from these tourist”. I found an article that talks about Promoting the Borough, as well as talking about how much New York Brings in a year from tourist spending at stores, restaurants, cultural institutions, tourist attractions and other establishments. This article was published on December 31, 1989. Stated in the article “through the years, Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden’s office, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and the non-profit fun for the Borough of Brooklyn have been the main torch-bearers for tourism in the borough, well aware that tourists visit then spend lots of money, create tax revenues and jobs”. Goes to show you that back in the day the Borough President was involved in promoting tourism. I also learned from this article tourist were spending 10 billion a year in Brooklyn in 1980s, that number probably significantly higher now.

  7. My research topic is about Dumbo modern façade. It was a little bit challenge to find resource in Brooklyn Collection. The one I found is called “Bedford- Stuyvesant, Historic Brownstones in Demand”, it was about the traditional brownstone façade attracts a lot of people to buy house there. The other one I found is called “Brooklyn New bldg. counts on feng shui”, which was attracting my eyes. It was about Beacon Tower was designed through the inspiration of Chinese culture—feng shui. For my research topic. Both of these two article are very good. One is about the charm of traditional façade, and the other one is about modern façade mixed with other culture. There was transition between them. For me, this country contains a lot of mixed cultures, traditional and modern mixed, I think that is why these things make this country unique.

  8. My research is about Brooklyn bridge, art and artist. As I was investigating materials that related to my topic I found a newspaper article which was published in 2013 daily news. The title of the article was “Art by the bridge”. In this article I learned that there is a three-day festival which happen almost every year or so named DUMBO art festival. It features more than 400 artists, 50 galleries and street installation in the trendy-nabe. Visitors can see artists working in their studios or step outside for live performances by dancers, poet and muralists. It also mentions the festival now in its 18th year is the largest free art event in the New York city. Also it drew more than 200,000 people in 2013.
Other resources I might look for next is maybe some images that were taken in any of these art festival for to have a better understanding of how colorful it looked each and every year.
At the same time, the date of the newspaper is very relevant to my topic and helps me understand my question better because it includes art, artist and Brooklyn bridge.

  9. My research on the brooklyn bridge is mainly focused on the gentrification and modernization of the area. This includes the community backlash from developers wanting to take the land and turning it into a commercial focused space. The research I’ve done at the brooklyn library has helped me to further understand this. One article specifically, talks about how developers are planning on modifying a high rise building on 38 Water street. By modifying the building they will be adding on and making the structure taller. The community is at unrest due to this because it will be blocking the view of the skyline and the water. Residential buildings in the area have apartments that offer the best view of this scene and if this building is going to block what people are paying for then the already existing buildings will have to lower the rent due to the view no longer being available.

  10. My research topic is about the DUMBO Walls project and how it relates to dumbo and its locals. My topic also focuses on how the project was created and what it was designed to achieve. The dumbo walls project began in 2012. The project places murals all around DUMBO. While at the library I found an article that spoke about one of the first few reactions to the murals. The art of all talks about a mystery married couple, who on their wedding day, decided to take photos in front of a freshly painted mural. The artists who were taking a break from painting the 15 by 92 foot mural, recalled being confused and nervous about the photos being taken. This event sparked a trend, more and more people began taking photos and visiting the mural. In the article the artist Alexander Miller, a DUMBO resident, asked for help to identify the couple who started the trend so he can thank them.
