10/4 Connect diagram and an actual place in Cadman Plaza

Write 50-100 words as a blog post in the comments that connects one point in your in-class diagram to an actual site or area in or around Cadman Plaza. Think about your site’s connection to the  Brooklyn Bridge as well as Borough Hall. Alternatively, think about a point of interest in your scheme and how it connects back to existing conditions. Differentiate between pedestrian and automobile connections.

  1. For my in-class diagram, I had to change the Cadman Plaza plan into a Medieval Urban Plan. By doing this, I had to make sure streets and areas where many houses/buildings are located, were curved, had winding streets and at the same time, included areas where a good big open space for all to come is available. Just like Italy has many streets shaped and created that way, I had to formulate my plan the exact same way. For my actual site or area in or around Cadman Plaza that connected in my diagram, I chose Borough Hall as a open space for all and at the same time, I chose Cadman Plaza. These areas in my Medieval Urban Plan, would be the main attractions where people could come to an open place and just relax. Unlike the real scheme of the area, my areas/streets near those open spaces would be curved and would have winding streets that would lead to the open place.

  2. For the in-class diagram, i was assigned the Imperial Roman style in which I would use a particular area or location that would be used as an access to join each other to transform as a path that would connect to Cadman Plaza. For my diagram, i designed a path that would joint together the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge, the Court Building and the U.S Post Office. I believe that these three main locations would help connect to Cadman Plaza. Also, the U.S.Post Office would also be considered a connection to Borough Hall as well as the Brooklyn Bridge because the U.S Post Office sits in the middle between Borough Hall and the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. The difference between pedestrian connection and automobile connection would be for an example if a pedestrian plans to walk from Borough Hall to Cadman Plaza it would be a straight pathway which would be easier then in a automobile.

  3. In the class diagram exercise, I was assigned to connect Cadman Plaza using the concept of New Urbanism. This concept of new urbanism is aiming for environment friendly design in which it is crucial to develop a space that takes into consideration and incorporates more green spaces and trees, pedestrian paths, bicycle paths, and even roads. So, for my redesign of Cadman Plaza using the ideas behind new urbanism I decided to do multiple things. The first change was expanding the plaza to the opposite side of the bridge allowing it to reach Jay Street combining the neighboring Whitman Park. This allowed me to combine both the entrances to the Brooklyn Bridge and Cadman Plaza creating a very unique focal point, which would also solve the current problem encountered of not begin enough signage providing direction for the Brooklyn Bridge. Next, from the Brooklyn bridge there would be a new passage way in which would take pedestrians to the center or main intersection of the newly expanded plaza. Another change that I incorporated were the addition of a central roadway that connects Cadman Plaza W. to Jay Street, as well as adding two pedestrian/bicycle paths which connect to the new main entrance on Tillary Street. With the expansion of the plaza I relocated the US District Court Clerk building as well as the residential buildings closer to Jay Street and adding more green spaces as well as tree near those relocated buildings. I think that making these possible changes and connecting the Brooklyn Bridge, Whitman Park, the US District Court Clerk building, the residential buildings, and the nearby streets would be a great way to start implementing and redeveloping a new urbanism area in Brooklyn that is aiming to be environment friendly and involved.

  4. Being assigned the Medieval Urban Plan for my diagram, I had to connect it to Cadman Plaza. For my Medieval Urban Plan, the concept was to make the roads narrow and curved, as well as the buildings being close together. Being that the roads had to be so narrow and curved, only pedestrians could walk through the streets, no automobiles could drive in the streets. With that being said, I made my diagram somewhat of a maze, where the narrow roads and curves would lead pedestrians in two different focal points. My two focal points were Columbus Park and Cadman Plaza. I expanded Columbus Park a little more towards Borough Hall, so that way pedestrians can connect through the Brooklyn Bridge through either Cadman Plaza or Columbus Park. I think both of these places would be great focal points, especially Columbus Park, because after getting through those narrow streets and curvy corners, pedestrians will end up in a relaxing, peaceful environment.

  5. For the in-class diagram, i was assigned with the Pedestrian Only style to change Cadman Plaza. This idea of Pedestrian Only, is by having the area a car-free zone meaning no types of automobile traffic around. It aims to provide better accessibility, mobility, and safety from car accidents for pedestrians. So the concept is to remove the roads where the automobiles drive around Cadman Plaza, and to crate more space for pedestrians to walk. For my diagram, I removed Tillary St and Johnson St, so Cadman Plaza could expand with Columbus Park and Korean War Veterans Plaza. I also removed Prospect St so it would connect with Anchorage Plaza, giving it a easier way to walk to the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Then, from the Brooklyn Bridge there will be a new passage way for pedestrians that will take them to the Brooklyn War Memorial. Next, I thought of connecting Whitman Park (which is near the memorial) by closing off Cadman Plaza E, giving more space for pedestrians to relax.

  6. The diagram I drew in class of the Cadman Plaza, was supposed to reflect the Medieval Urban Plan, so therefore I drew out the Cadman Plaza and tried to figure out a way to redesign it and make it look more Medieval Urban Plan. I constructed that by making winding roads entrances from the BQE. I also tried constructing it so it would be very easy to connect to the Brooklyn Bridge Pedestrian walk. It would be nice if there was a bridge to gap over the plaza, similar to the pedestrian bridge that we saw in Paris (Parc De Berry). This pedestrian walkway would differentiate the entrances from the automobiles who are trying to enter the area. As we know it is very crowded in the area with lot of federal buildings so therefore it is impossible to find parking. I think the Brooklyn Bride pedestrian walkway should have that bridge lapping over the traffic of cars to the Cadman Plaza Park. I think it would be cool if there was a pedestrian bridge connecting from about the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian walkway entrance to the plaza.

  7. For the in-class diagram, I re-imagined Cadman Plaza with the concepts of New Urbanism. First, I identified important points such as Cadman Plaza, Borough Hall and the nearest train entrance. as they interact with the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian walkway. The government buildings all face towards the plaza which leaves the entrance of the bridge isolated from the focus of power. This gives two opportunities to either recede the entrance of the Bridge to the North end of Cadman Plaza or visually extend it with a tree-lined path, to Joralemon Street. The first idea to explore underground connections that link the High St. station entrance on Adams St to Brooklyn Bridge Blvd, while shortening the pedestrian walkway of the bridge. In this case designing a more engaging entrance to Whitman Park will immediately capture people coming out of the station and lead them into the park. The second possibility is to extend the walkway. The idea is that Borough Hall will draw pedestrians towards it, but activities in the plaza such as the farmers market will disperse the people towards the park to avoid congestion.

  8. For the in-class diagram, I was assigned with the Pedestrian Only style to change Cadman Plaza. When we walk through the Brooklyn Bridge, a lot of people may have the same feeling as me: From the entrance of Brooklyn Bridge nearby Brooklyn site to the first tower, it is a long path and nothing fun. In my opinion, I want to reduce the distance of the path way and connect it to the Cadman Plaza Park. The reason for that Cadman Plaza Park is and interesting point in Brooklyn, and it just located right nearby the Brooklyn Bridge. Another benefit is that we can reduce the traffic on Tillary St which is the entrance of Brooklyn Bridge now.

  9. The in-class diagram, I had to redesign Cadman Plaza with the concept of pedestrians only. I intend to block the Brooklyn Bridge exit to Cadman Plaza W by converting it to a walkway for pedestrians and also including a bike line. This will become the new entrance to the Brooklyn bridge instead at Tillary St and Adams St. This would promote a new approach to the bridge and will allow pedestrian to get to the bridge faster. Also combine or make a walkway bridge to Whitman Park to Cadman Plaza will allow pedestrians to walk without worrying of traffic. Korean War Veterans Plaza would be connected with Cadman Plaza removing the street Tillary Street.

  10. In class we were selected a type of mediavel place where, I was giving a Imperial Roman. The Imperial Roman were it has a bunch of things like Collesume river that past by near them. In my map Cadman Plaza concept with Pedesterian and automobile connections, I connect the pedestrian, automobile, and the bike lane to the begin. The Bike lane goes on the outside of the Cadman Plaza, and cars too.The pedestrian goes near the Cadman Plaza. The Pedestrian goes inside the site too.The Imperalism is much more diffuclt then I thought.

  11. In the class outline work I was given to redesign Cadman Plaza utilizing the idea of New Urbanism. This idea of new urbanism to me is more of green spaces and trees, fresh environment, person on foot ways, bike ways, and even streets. Along these lines, for my design of Cadman Plaza utilizing the thoughts behind new urbanism I chose to do numerous things. The main change that i picked was to plant more trees and small roads connecting Jay Street and Whitman Park. The second thing that came to my mind was to expand the walkway. The thought is that Borough Hall will draw walkers towards it, yet exercises in the square. Next, from the Brooklyn connect there would be another section path in which would take walkers to the inside or primary convergence of the recently extended court. I also tried to add separate lane for people, bikers and vehicles decorating people side with gardens and trees.

  12. in the class diagram, I have been chosen the Medieval Urban Plan to redesign the Cadman Plaza. I try to figure out a way to contain the medieval urban plan. I design to make the road surround the Cadman Plaza, it would become the center of it. Everything is walking up to the bridge, who must go through the cad man Plaza. At the same time, I wanted to create the symbol to represent the Brooklyn Bridge. the entry and the exit of the bridge were not obvious, and it’s making Cadman Plaza prominent. I think we can create the pathway, that can directly walk or drive up to the Brooklyn bridge.

  13. For my in class diagram, i had to redesign Cadman Plaza in the imperial roman style which is known largely for its use of colonnades, arches and domes. while there were no chances for the use of a dome, there are opportunities for colonnades. so in my redesigning of the plaza, i replaced Whitman park which lays in between the plaza and the bridge with a round about fitted with a huge statue in the middle, a pathways for vehicles stretching from the south towards the round about then diverts to the right underneath the bridge into a parking lot on the other side of the bridge. Another path coming from the north towards the same round about but for pedestrians and cyclist which then diverts to west side into the plaza itself and connects with the pre-existing paths within the park. The entire circumference of the park is then fitted with colonnades connected at the top while one of the path at the southern most part of the park leads to the street along the Korean war veterans plaza and Columbus park straight to Borough hall.
