  1. transtheoretical model of behavior change is a is a five step model. It implies that change is not a discrete decision but a 5 step process that consists of precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. at the precontemplation stage people are not even aware that there is a problem or sure that they want to change. in the contemplation stage people want to start a healthy behavior but are unsure or unenthusiastic about the idea. In the contemplation stage they are ready and have already started to make little behavioral changes toward their health goals. once in the action stage people have changed their behavior and have to work hard to maintain it. After doing the behavior for 6 months they have entered into the maintenance stage. health psychology is interested in the psychology behind health related behaviors and how people can learn how to change them. they assess peoples readiness for change and diagnose where the difficulty with change comes from. people have to build up their motivation to change. This model has been widely used in the treatment of substance abuse, obesity diabetes. Change can be a difficult process where the person has to see the benefit in the change. Despite knowing the benefits changing to more positive health behaviors still seems to be challenging for most.
