Culture Jamming – BP 10

Ulmer’s Question:

Do you think that our intake of social media is the reason why electracy is the way that it is? Like does he think that electracy would be at a much greater level of power if social media wasn’t marketed the way that it is and made an impact against our youth?

In the section The Visceral Turn, he speaks on the way that consumerism has increased thanks to the help of social media. As well as the way that many thrive to reach a certain level of influence to get that consumerism. And Ulmer speaks on this with the tone of showing that this behavior when it comes to electracy isn’t the best way of going around for moving forward with electracy.

Madrigal

I found this reading extremely informative. Madrigal speaks on the popularity of culture jamming but also speaks on how there are many people who are not using it to their best use. How yes, it maybe cause people to stop and think about where and what they are buying, but it’s not pushing them to actually make these companies step back and rethink their consumerism. There is also the part where Madrigal mentions that how to use culture jamming to affect the purpose of these companies. Their money. Which I found interesting. I have heard of culture jamming prior to this class and had thought because it made an impact on me, it might have made an impact on these companies. But all because they lose one person’s money, does not mean it got the rest of the world to stop buying from these brands. This is why learning how to get these companies to actually see what they are doing wrong, was extremely interesting.

Culture Jam Project

For my first image, I drew Elon Musk riding the Twitter bird with a gag in the beak that says “Free Speech”. I did this to show the irony of the reasons behind Musk buying Twitter. Many of us use Twitter and have seen firsthand how he buys and states, within hours of sealing the deal with Twitter’s prior leaders, that Free Speech is now being given back to Twitter. More specifically comedy; you can now make jokes about anything without being in trouble. But only if those jokes are not about Musk himself. There were a couple of comedians that made jokes to look like Elon is making crazy statements himself, and when they did Musk got offended. So what doe he do? He goes on to block all of the pages of people who made fun of him. So is free speech can only be given to the ones who don’t offend Musk?

My second image speaks on the animal abuse that goes on to make makeup for people who want them. I used to brand Maybelline and their headline of “Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s Maybelline.” To show the way that their makeup is not coming from nonabusive companies. Where these animals go on to be trapped in cages with other animals to be tested to see the effects of the makeup they make on these animals versus how it would look on humans. Even though this makeup is being made for humans because I don’t think a rabbit is going into CVS to get lipstick.

-Loved the drawing of Elon riding the twitter bird very memorable.

-To be honest I do not see anything that doesn’t work here.

-You can improve the image by having a background, but it might take away from the message.

    – Highlight the “free speech” more, it was not that noticeable at first.

    Image #2:

-Nice play with words, very enjoyable to read and capture the essence.

-The words NEW YORK do not work in the picture.

-Rabbit can be shown with a cone around its neck. Then we can see its hurt by showing more of what’s done to it, the message will be more intense and allow us to remember it.

-Getting rid of the words New York in the picture. It does not match up to where this is happening because it is everywhere.

For image 1, I automatically knew what I wanted to do. What I did for the image was used procreate to trace and draw the images to create the image you all see. I didn’t really face any issues because I had already an idea of what I wanted to do for this image.

As for image 2, that one was harder. I didn’t want to just use the same method as I did for the first image so I had done was try to edit an image using PicsArt on my iPad to edit a Maybelline advertisement. I knew that I wanted to go with either a makeup advertisement or even the use of the animal cruelty commercials I’m sure we all saw growing up. You know the ones with the “Arms of an angle” song in the background. So this one I really need some advice on.

I do see that with image 1 I would possibly need to enhance the phrase “Free Speech’ so that the message gets across a lot better. And as for image 2, I would need to clean it up or even change the entire image depending on the comments I get. As for advice on what to use, I would say if you have access to an iPad, please use it. It made my process of making these two images, although made through different media, definitely helped me because I got to see them on a bigger and closer screen.

I really loved your drawing! It looks great. Maybe you could add a background that represents the people that are being blocked from expressing their opinions.

    Image #2:

I love the message, but I do think that you can use the same message and give it some more originality. Maybe tweak the image more to give it some more emphasis.

    Hey,

For image #1 I really liked how you put Elon Musk on the Twitter symbol, very creative however I think you can improve it by adding words or more images on the background. Overall, great message and picture.

Image #2. Wow, this was resourceful. I never thought of making brushes like that. Thank you for bringing that to our attention. I think you can definitely improve it by adding more messages behind the image and discussing further regarding the animal abuse issue.

This was really cool! I like the fact that it’s Elon riding the twitter bird considering he just overpaid in buying it, and that there is questions and concerns on free speech on the platform. I would say maybe add a little more detail on the messaging behind free speech.

    Image #2

I found this message pretty clear and I love the work done. I would say to improve it maybe add a bit more about the animal abuse.

I liked the drawing of Elon musk. I would suggest adding an image or two in correlation with this to make the message more clear. It’s a great picture that I agree with.

image 2: I liked the awareness for animal testing. I would say to maybe make the letters thinner to match the maybelline lettering and maybe stick some maybe on the bunny to give the animal testing effect. Other than I like the it.

  7. Image 1: First one is great. The free speech message is NOT getting across, but I’m sure it will get there. You could add more visual interest in the background.

Image 2: I think you got some good advice from your colleagues.
