Anthony’s Final Sketches

Hello All, these are my final sketches:

1 –  The first one deals with the LGBTQ adoption laws. it portraits some storks being thought that they should not deliver babies to gay couples. The storks represent the adoptions agencies that make nearly impossible for gay couples to adopt in the US.

2 – Deals with global warming and the effects that the melting ice caps will have on environment.

3 – the third sketch is a variation of the second sketch.

Please let me know what your thoughts are on these.

Thanks!

Anthony

Color Theory Review: Concepts and Terminology

The Three Attributes of a Color

To accurately describe a color and differentiate it from another there are 3 attributes to measure.

1466095636630

 HUE

When the average person says “color” they are actually mean hue. The hue of a color is its particular light wave energy frequency. Remember, light is waves of energy, and white light is contains all possible colors! Violet is the highest visible light frequency and red is the lowest, which we humans have receptors to see.

In this diagram, note how the blue becomes pink, but all of the colors in between are of equal intensity, as it as it moves from right to left.

SATURATION

Saturation (or chroma as it is sometimes called) means a color’s purity. When people are talking about a color’s intensity they mean its saturation or chroma.

In the diagram, note how the blue becomes less saturated as it as it moves from right to left.

VALUE

As we discussed earlier in the course, colors have values just as shades of gray do. A color’s brightness or darkness, and its nearness to white or black respectively, is the color’s value. Value is independent of hue or saturation and can be seen even in a black-and-white photo.

Tints, Shades, and Tones

Value has is has its own color terminology.

Remember that the value of a color is how light or dark a color is, or how close it is to black.

Tints are when we add white to a pure hue:

Shades are when we add black to a pure hue:

1466095660440

Saturation also has its own color terminology.

We get different tones when we add gray to a pure hue:

1466095671579

Another way to envision this is as the hue itself becomes less saturated, it appears more and more gray.

Munsell’s Color Tree

Talking about color can be very misleading! For example, when you go to a paint store, you can buy a can of Honorable Blue, Flyway, or Wondrous Blue! When we say Flesh Tone, what exactly does that mean? Whose Flesh Tone are we talking about?  It can be very confusing!

1409346652367

Albert Munsell, an artist and professor the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, felt the same way. In 1905 he developed a “rational way to describe color” using numeric notation instead of names to describe color. To assign these numbers he used the three attributes we discussed above: huevalue, and chroma (saturation).

1409346684313

In the diagram above, you can see the traditional color wheel as the center ring, and Munsell’s Color Tree, as it came to be known, growing from the center. The trunk of the tree represents zero to ten in value. The farther we move from its “trunk” represents an increase in chroma, until the hue—represented by the separate “branches”—is at full saturation, farthest away from the center.

Devin’s Final Sketches

Here are my final sketches for the Editorial Illustration Project. The first picture is a boy with autism looking at the lake, seeing the muppet, Julia as the reflection. The metaphor for this sketch is that he sees the muppet as himself. This sketch is used to represent the article, “Meet The New Kid On ‘Sesame Street’: Julia, A Muppet With ” by Mary Papenfuss. The second picture is the monstrous mom approaching the kid that bullied her son with a soft ball. The metaphor for this sketch is that the mother has turned into a monster after witnessing her son being bullied. That sketch is for the article, ” When Mothers Bully Back” by Susan Perabo. The third picture is the boy with autism touching Julia’s hand as they stare at each other. The metaphor for this sketch is the same as the first picture. This sketch alo represents the same article as the first one. So which one do you think I should go with? Comment below.

It’s Digital “heroin”: how screens turn kids into psychotic junkies

http://nypost.com/2016/08/27/its-digital-heroin-how-screens-turn-kids-into-psychotic-junkies/?utm_source=pocket&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=pockethits

I liked this article because it addresses the changes of technology on the upcoming generation. In this article, it’s discussed how little kids who are being introduced to devices and technology happen to have symptom systems of narcotics use. They have found that children’s brain look like they just took cocaine when their brain scans were viewed. This topic is really interesting

The Future of Loneliness

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/apr/01/future-of-loneliness-internet-isolation

This article is on the effects of social media, technology and the internet on mental health and personality. The author uses the tri-annial show exhibition that exhibited a while back. The show itself was on how technology has driven many people into loneliness and have become alienated. The author believes that the internet has become this tool where we can design personality according to our desires and just build this false sense of personality. As well, social media has changed how people interact with each other. All in all, technology has changed how we go about life and perceive the world and that’s what the author wants to show in this articles. Give it a read.

Japan Dolphin Hunting

In this article from National Geographic, it goes over the issue of dolphin hunting that occurs annually in Taiji, Japan. The Fishermen would lower one end of a steel pipe into the water, and then they would strike the pipe with mallets to through off the dolphins sonar. The dolphins would get pushed back near a bay where a net from the fishermen will close them in. The dolphins are left there overnight to calm down since they’re panicked at this point. the fisherman would then come back and slice the dolphins throats. According to the article, Fishermen would gather about 1,000 of these dolphins and would either slaughter them for their meat or sell them to marine parks. Also in Japan they hunt whales as well. I know these hunts have been going on for years in Japan but I find it not right for these amazing creatures to be killed. Well in general I don’t like the idea of any animal to be hunted down especially to turn them into merchandise.

Meet The New Kid On ‘Sesame Street’: Julia, A Muppet With Autism

On March 20, 2017 at 3:28 a.m., Sesame Street announced that they will introduce a new Muppet character on television in April. Julia, a little girl Muppet with red hair and a favorite bunny clutched in her hand has autism and have appeared in Sesame Street’s online digital storybook series back in 2015. This character won’t just represent people that have autism or Asperger’s syndrome, but also help children better understand kids with autism. Julia’s puppeteer, Stacey Gordon has a son with autism. This intrigues me because I feel like society don’t treat autistic people with enough respect or even try to really got to know them better. I know this all too well since I too have autism. I grew up seeing autism as nothing more than just a curse, but now I know that I’m more than just someone with a disability. This article actually gave me some hope knowing that kids will soon have a better understanding of autism from watching Julia on t.v. because I personally think that there’s not enough cartoon characters with autism and Asperger’s syndrome. Speaking of cartoon characters, I actually based one of my own characters, Xavier J. Clayton off of me. Maybe someday society will learn to accept all different types of people no matter how socially awkward the person is.

Pet Store Animals

One of my contemporary issue that I feel needs more attention towards is animals that pet shops sell. Most of the puppies and kittens that are sold within these shops are sick and/or injured. They are kept in unsanitary conditions and do not get the proper veterinary treatment. It’s even worse knowing the fact that the puppies are brought from mills that are notorious for their cramped, filthy conditions and for their continuous breeding of unhealthy and hard-to-socialize animals. This article from PETA also includes most of the small pets that are seen in pet stores such as birds, rabbits and other small animals comes from mills as well. Most of the time I only hear about puppy mills but now I learned that more animals are brought in the terrible conditions. I want to bring more awareness to this issue because these animals are just being treated as merchandise and being exposed to terrible conditions.

Animal Cosmetics Testing

The second contemporary issue that interests me was Animal Cosmetics Testing. In today’s world, beauty was a thing for everyone. People buy lot and lots of cosmetics to keep themselves look good. This Animal Cosmetics Testing thing is not an issue that was commonly known. People brought their cosmetics base on how the advertising and company sell them. As long as its good for the skin, people will buy it. According to the article “Testing Cosmetics and Household Products on Animals:,”  animal was being tested on cosmetics product to see the effects. Although the non-animal test is widely available, a lot of companies are still testing their product on the animal. A lot of countries such as European, Israel, and India had already banned this method but not U.S. So, why is Animal Cosmetics Testing such a big deal? The product that is tested on the animal will often leave side effect and even cause an animal to die. Why do we have to test on the animal when there’s a way to save their lives? This issue is not being concerned about in out society, that’s why I want to bring this up.
