In my bibliography I’m trying to reach out to people that struggle with mental issues and who also would like to better themselves. If you’re dealing with mental health issues or may just want to improve your mindset, practices of virtue will be a step forward in achieving eudaimonia(well-being, happiness and flourishing). I’m choosing a ted talk with the class because the best way to introduce someone to stoicism isn’t by force. It’s impossible to force someone Into eudaimonia. My first step in completing this project will be creating an introduction to catch the class attention and not just a listen/learn situation. I’m worried about trying to remember every topic to bring up.Theres a lot of key points I have to hit. Some are the history of stoicism, why people study it, how you can benefit from it, how stoicism impacts the world. There’s much more that will be said in my ted talk. I fear summarizing the points too quickly and not fully explaining them. When learning new ideals people will question a lot so in order to have this ted talk I will have a paper stating what topics to hit and the sub topics.

Anderson, Kare. ā€œFive Reasons Why Stoicism Matters Today.ā€ Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 30 Sept. 2012, www.forbes.com/sites/kareanderson/2012/09/28/five-reasons-why-stoicism-matters-today/.
There are multiple contributors to this article but they basically explain why stoicism is taught. To start off the article they explained to us how politicians tend to not ā€œwear their emotions anywhere other than on their sleeve. Specifically they stated,ā€Most public figures are all outward passion, all backslapping, bear hugs, and (when the occasion calls for it) barely repressed tears cool on the outsideā€ is something Americans rarely see in a politicianā€. Considering stoicism influenced a lot of political leaders in the past, its teachings were bound to spread across the world. Stoicism was created at a time when the world was falling apart. These teachings helped people find their peace of mind and find happiness no matter the situation that arises. Stated in the second margin,ā€Stoicism tells us that no happiness can be have if itā€™s rooted in changeable, destructible things. Our bank accounts can grow or shrink, our careers can prosper or falter, even our loved ones can be taken from usā€. This practice was also the first Western philosophy to preach universal brotherhood meaning anyone could practice this no matter your race, sex, or religion. In the grand scheme of things stoicism can benefit everyone on earth.
As society continues to increasingly evolve, so should our ideologies. Stoic teachings can be linked to the reason why most things happened the way the have. These teachings were even used during war times as stated in the article,ā€Stockdale spent more than seven years in a Vietnamese prison, and he wrote that Stoicism saved his life. Stockdale had spent years studying Stoic thought before deploying, and he drew on those teachings to endure his captivityā€. If an imprisoned soldier was able to use the teachings to push through solitude, Iā€™m certainly positive anyone can benefit from it. This is a wonderful article for those who wonder why stoicism has continued since 300 BCE (before the common era) until now in the present time. Weā€™ve all had times or just bad days in general. But thatā€™s a part of life it all depends on your reaction and what you decide to do next. One swallow does not make a springā€(meaning just because one good day happens that wonā€™t make a person entirely happy)a remark found in Aristotleā€™s Nicomachean Ethics. Everyone has a fortress inside of them but it wonā€™t hold up if you donā€™t mentally train to stay indifferent from what happens on the outside.

10/24 conclusion

Stoicism can kill your imagination because if you focus all your energy into achieving eudaimonia, how can you overthink about things that aren’t in your control. Like I mentioned in the intro each one of the source entries typed answers a certain question, why do we suffer in our imagination rather than reality, what does stoicism in the 20th century look like, and lastly why stoicism is taught. If you’re dealing with underlying mental health issues or may just want to improve your mindset these practices of virtue will be a step forward in achieving eudaimonia. Having a philosophy that can be learned no matter the race, sex, or age is important and could truly uplift the whole world.
