Homework 10/5

The topic that I want to research is wether immigration policies should be reformed or not. I’m interested in this topic because I myself am an immigrant, and everyday I notice the struggles that immigrants and refugees are facing and how there are many policies that are working against them. Many of these immigrants are coming all this way because of many reasons, one of them being because of dangerous living situations. I feel like we shouldn’t dismiss the need for support that these immigrants are asking for because they are just trying to live a better life. In this year alone there has been an enormous influx of immigrants and refugees in the US border and its causing a crisis because the government is failing to provide the necessary resources to help them. What I want to research are the policies surrounding immigrants and if they are helpful or not. I want to know if there are policies that need to be changed or completely removed in order to benefit them more. I also want to know what is being done to tackle this influx of immigrants and what their future is going to look like. I want to be more informed in this topic because it is important to know what is happening in the country and staying informed.

Homework 10/3

When I was younger, I used to be really obsessed with dystopian movies/ Tv shows. Even to this day I still like these types of shows/movies. These shows/movies are a good way to raise awareness of societal issues because of how many societies around the world are reflected in them, as well as what can occur in the future if we don’t solve many of the problems we have today. The older I get, the more I understand how these shows/movies aren’t made just for entertainment, I can see how they might become a reality in our community. For example, in the movie “The Giver”, the educational system is a big part of the society. What they do in that society is that they erase any traits that might make someone different from another person. They make sure to suppress an individuality and any creativity one might have. Information is very tightly controlled; students are not allowed to access knowledge outside of what they are being taught so they are not aware of the fact that they are living in an oppressive society. This movie shows in a way what might happen if we every try to suppress creativity and individuality in our own society. It made me think about our educational system and how I feel like it is flawed because as a student, I feel like the things we learn are outdated and many of the things that we need to know in today’s world are not taught. For example, I feel like emotional intelligence is something that should be taught in schools. Not only should we bring awareness to mental health, but we need to teach students how communication and developing healthier ways of dealing with stress and developing healthier relationships are very important, which can help with their overall well being.

Homework 9/28

After rereading “Later” by James Surowiecki, by following my rereading plan, I found that my feelings from before are the same. The only thing that changed was that I now knew the meaning of a lot of words that had me stumped before. His examples and the way he included certain words, made the paragraph come together. In the article he said, “According to Piers steel, a business professor at the University of Calgary, the percentage of people who admitted to difficulties with procrastination quadrupled between 1978 and 2002. In that light, it’s impossible to see procrastination as the quintessential problem.” The first time I read this article, I had no idea what the word quintessential meant which made me feel very confused about what the author was trying to say in this paragraph. Now that I am re reading the article and knowing that quintessential means something that is the most common, I now understand that the author is simply trying to say that procrastination is a very common modern problem. Another example is when he mentioned how theorist Thomas Schelling proposed that we play an internal game called “the divided self.” In the article it says, “Schelling proposes that we think of our selves not as unified selves but as different beings, jostling, contending, and bargaining for control.” When I first read this part, I had a really hard time trying to understand what this paragraph, and more specifically, this sentence was trying to tell me as a reader. I was confused on what “jostling” and “contending” meant which had stopped me from fully understanding the message. I now know that what Schelling was trying to say was that we have different beings inside of us that are fighting for control, and half tends to be the person that wants to procrastinate, while the other is the one that wants to do what we need to do. Knowing the meaning of words helps me a lot when trying to understand an article.
