Immigrants face a lot of different issues everyday when trying to cross the border into the United States. Some of the immigrants that are crossing the border illegally are children who go alone without their parents. While all the issues surrounding immigrants are important, I believe that issues surrounding court hearings and legal proceedings are very crucial. One of the issues surrounding immigrant children is: “Children arrested by the U.S. government have no right to court-appointed representation in immigration proceedings.” This quote very straightforwardly highlights the reality that these immigrant children are tasked with navigating the intricate immigration law by themselves. The importance of legal representation is crucial because its presence or absence can determine the future of these immigrant children.

Homework 11/7

-The platform I would like to publish in is The Washington post. I say this because I believe that a lot of lawyers and government officials read articles on that website.

-The types of articles and media on that website are: sport articles, business and economy articles, news articles, opinion articles, video interviews, documentaries, and more.

-Since the washington post publishes a lot of diverse articles with many different perspectives and topics, this can attract many different audiences. The website provides many different article types in order to attract a broader audience.

-The length of an article depends on the type of article it will be. An opinion article can be around 600 to 1,000 words while a news article can be around 800 words.

-The tone is usually very professional, neutral fact based, and informative. This can change on the type of article.

-The type of diction used is very clear, objective, and formal.

-The authors use evidence to make their points credible and to back up what they are saying. They usually do it in the form of statistics or direct quotations from people who are relevant in to their story. They also use many other sources in order to back up their claims.

-The washington post website is very black and white but the pictures and or videos included at the beginning of articles can be very colorful or dull depending on the topic. For example, an article about war will have a picture of rubble and broken buildings, while an article about sports will have a picture of a famous player or a field.

-I think that this would be a good publication website in order to reach my intended audience because I am trying to reach student lawyers, judges, lawyers, and government officials that make and reform policies. The Washington post has a lot of fact-based informative articles which is the perfect place to bring light to my topic.

Homework 11/2

I think that the most important thing I learned in unit two is that we need to provide legal counsel for these kids to ensure that they are being correctly represented with their best interests at heart and to lower their chance of getting deported. It’s important to bring awareness to this issue so that these children are not being unfairly deported when they are all alone. The audience that needs to hear about my topic the most are lawyers, law students, and government officials. I say this because I believe that these people have the most power to incite change and implement policies that can be beneficial to unaccompanied minors in court. The genre that I think i’m going to write in is a news article because I believe it’s the best way to reach my audience and update them on current news that they might not know about. News articles are very hands on and showcase how current issues are affecting individuals. My first step will be to look at how news articles are written and try to outline how i’m going to start my own. What i’m worried about is sounding repetitive and not delivering the information in a satisfactory way.
