In closing my research “How does child abuse child abuse affect children’s mental?” It has added to my understanding of the many victims who are living in silence just because of the fear they have over their lives. It also allowed me to see that we cannot stop child abuse but, we can work together to bring awareness to the problem to try slowing the spread of it. During my reading, the information that astounded me the most was when the author of the article “Jason Cross” stated that “13,820 reports made in 2017. Using the 2011 census, this means that there are 1,730 reports per 100,000 minors aged 0-17”. For a country that small (JAMAICA) I would consider that as an extremely high report for the year. Learning about child abuse is important because, being educated helps individuals to listen and look out for or children and others, providing protection and also sharing the word with the world. It also shapes the thinking of adults to be more alert to changes in their kids whether physical, emotional, or any other way. It helps to provide support in any form. However, learning about abuse is pivotal to ensure the safety and well-being of children and to protect their innocence. Given that doing this research gained me some more knowledge it is for the public themselves to gain knowledge and be aware more about these tragic incidents.

Child abuse

Knowing child abuse is a disruptive common case for children and adults, I further used the YouTube video above titled, Healing Adults Survivors of Child Abuse as a final source entry. The speaker “Fire Brown” was an advocate to her audience explaining her devasting child abuse encounter when she was a child and sharing her healing process. Brown proceeded by stating the three stages of the healing process which were “remembering, mourning and healing.” After that, she started speaking about the incident that took place. Brown was shocked, frightened, and scared. Following such a brutal assault as a little girl, (the day)s after she began to have flashbacks, dreams, terrible memories, and nightmares of being molested.

Years later brown started having massive impacts from being abused. She developed anxiety, depression, agoraphobia and also being a drunkard. She clearly wanted to heal but the effects/impacts were taking over her mental health and she just didn’t know how to control herself from that. Brown didn’t want to continue to live her life going through all of that pain and suffering, because she eventually started to develop suicidal thoughts as many victims would have also developed. However, a few more years later the child abused victim brown sought help. She went to therapy to get some support, because she wanted to be healed. She didn’t see herself doing it by herself. Many victims are afraid to seek help because they fear a lot. They are ashamed of not wanting people to know their story because most people are judgmental these days, they also fear not knowing if the person they are talking to is also a molester because now that they’ve experienced that incident the trust level for them is low.

Based on observations from people I know personally, articles I’ve read, and the audios I’ve listened to, is that victims’ biggest fear is to speak. The reason for this is, that when they do express themselves, many of them are not believed by listeners, and that gives the victims some more pressure because they’ve seen where there is no one to listen to them. Another reason is that they are told “not to tell,” because telling is a risk to their lives and the molesters threaten to kill the victims if they tell. This is why there are so many cases so many suicidal thoughts from victims and so much depression because they don’t know how to heal from their trauma.

The YouTube audio titled ‘Daddy” conveyed its message across easily to tell a whole story of a child abuse incident and also sends a message to adults and kids. The writer made the song off a true story of her being sexually assaulted by her father as a child in the past and was very straight forward in sending the information to understand through her words. “Queen Ifrica” the song writer was evidently traumatized by her expressions. Her song was a voice for many victims and an eye opener for parents to look out more attentively for their kids who are surrounded by men. It was appealing to listeners based on the emotions and facts that many people can relate to, which actually helped made the song more detailed and appropriate in my opinion.

I think mothers should make them self a bit more open to their kids so that they don’t have a fear in speaking to them about situations like those. The writer even used this line of the song;

To all you mothers out thereGive a listening earPay attention even if di man a pastorYuh affi mek sure before yuh trust him wid yuh daughtaPlus him will even try fi tek yuh son as brawta”

Meaning that they should listen to their daughters complain and not ignore the signs. She then continued in that third line trying to say that even if he’s a pastor it doesn’t matter still listen to their child because a pastor is just a title, but a pastor can still go ahead do the same just like the regular so don’t be fooled by the title.
