Homework 10/24 – Brian Tenecela

COVID-19 had a significant impact on college students’ performance following the switch to the online learning environment. After taking a closer in-depth analysis of the research resources used it can be concluded that there indeed has been a significant impact on the college students’ performance surprisingly more negative than positive. Furthermore, the research conducted was of great importance especially those who are currently students or in the learning environment. A lot of the research showed many negative outcomes such as complications with time, lack of a support system, family inconveniences, income struggles, etc. College students faced a lot of problems during the pandemic. However, this research also helps bring to mind all of the endless possibilities to prevent these problems from reoccurring if any other pandemic were to arise. Methods and plans of action in the journal source by author Alyssa alleviate and bring to light a solution to a future pandemic encounter. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the world unexpectedly hard changing the lives of many people due to the never-ending inconveniences but through the research conducted, may people become more aware of what our students have faced and be better prepared for any future pandemics that may come our way.

Homework 10/19 – Brian Tenecela

Lederer, Alyssa M., et al. “More than inconvenienced: The unique needs of U.S. college students during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Health Education & Behavior, vol. 48, no. 1, 2020, pp. 14–19, https://doi.org/10.1177/1090198120969372.

In “More than inconvenienced: The unique needs of U.S. college students during the COVID-19 pandemic” writer Alyssa begins her journal by introducing the situation with students’ education being so unhealthy and difficult prior to the pandemic that would take place later on. She includes the group that was already undergoing severe difficulties which were the students of color and low income which would go through more complications following the pandemic. Author Alyssa further goes in depth with college students and COVID-19, giving a detailed rundown of all of the inconveniences/problems that came about as a result of the pandemic. Alyssa states, “Concurrent with their schoolwork, many students have expanded their caregiving roles…deal with the loss of loved ones…will become seriously ill themselves…Students…may need to alter their plans significantly, likely interfering with their personal, academic, and professional trajectory”.  This quote captures every inconvenience problem each and every single one of the college students has had to face either one or more of them since COVID-19 was directly affecting college students mentally and physically. As from the quote, a ton of people passed away from COVID-19 complications majority of which could have well been a family member of a college student. Lack of jobs in society as well as restrictions from schools in an effort to fight the continuous transmission of COVID-19 really just further damaged students’ mental health making them more anxious and worried. Author Alyssa’s journal does a phenomenal job covering all the problems that came about due to the pandemic as well as continuing her journal by including possible fighting efforts for future pandemics as well as solutions to the problems that could be taken to strengthen and better support college students’ if there ever came another pandemic.

Homework 10/17

Fawcett, Eliza. “The Pandemic Generation Goes to College. It Has Not Been Easy.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 1 Nov. 2022, www.nytimes.com/2022/11/01/us/covid-college-students.html.

In “The Pandemic Generation Goes to College. It Has Not Been Easy.” writer Eliza Fawcett goes in-depth with the generation that suffered from the pandemic in this case being high school students transferring over to college. Eliza explains that a lot of material that the students needed to absorb has been missed and not fully taught to them as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. She explores all the problems students had to face and the restrictions that were brought into place as a result. The complete absence from the school scenery slowly shifted them away from that experience. Eliza explains that students had difficulty even learning or staying on task due to outside factors occurring in their lives that unenabled them to stay focused.  As well as stated resources usually offered to students in school like extra help or 1 on 1 were not always available or frequent. Eliza quotes “The problems have been particularly bad for first-year students, said Paulo Lima-Filho, the executive director of the university’s math learning center, which provides tutoring” Eliza in quoting the executive director Paulo Lima-Filho explicitly shows the distress that exists within universities and the challenge first-year students face as a result from dealing with the pandemic, negatively hurting them as a result.
