We will be printing the heck out these today for those who had trouble printing on their own. Then we will crit the results. If you made no attempt, your grade will be lowered.
Interactive Zines
We have to start working on these, so I will walk through some of possibilities today. Here are some files and an interactive pdf handout.
Homework
Gather any videos, song files or other assets you want to add to your zines.
Holy cow, I had the worst time getting this to work! Indesign has changed a lot of stuff and it is now a total pain in the oil pan, but I found some good resources. Here is a zine I was working on for us to work with, so let’s download it (it’s unfinished as the method I was describing was not working).
Zines
I want you to try and make your booklet in class whether you are finished with the layout or not. We may run into some major issues as we cannot modify permissions on the school computers. If that is the case, I will make your booklet pdfs for you to send to the printer’s.
Here is an example of a booklet of a regular, no-full bleed zine.
Here is one with the full bleed, laid out on 11×17″ paper with trim marks.
Type Books These are much more straightforward, so we will go over making these into pdfs and sending them to FedEx. I want them to be bound on the left edge with a spiral binding, with the cover of your choice. The cheapest version is a plasticized paper back and a clear plastic cover. Remember to clean them up and make the compositions work as best they can.
Homework
Finish your printed zines. Have at least one copy for next Thursday.
Also, print your type books, with the cover and spiral edge.
Today, we are critiquing the zines! That will be most if not all of the class.
We may or may not watch Helvetica in class today, depending on how much we cover in the crit.
Student Show Submissions
It’s that time of year again! I need 12 submissions for the art show, so pdf your best work and send it to me by tomorrow. I will choose 12 great pages and submit them ASAP.
Homework
Work on your zines! They need to be ready to go for the week we come back. We will discuss how to print them tomorrow.
