Homework 1.3

Based on the articles we have read so far; the conventions of the educational narrative genre seem pretty specific and clear. All of the three authors talk about their personal life stories or the points of view(s), that while reading they want a reader to go through and understand their choices and feelings. In their writing they specify the characters that are involved, mostly the stories were about the immigrant parents and themselves / the authors. I loved how they prescribed their feelings/emotions so that the reader can get into the story deeper, one of the examples I took from the text “Fourth of July” page 1 “In it, the readers can see the anger that spurred much of Lordes writing” and then further in this writing piece we can see how people / family faced all of the struggles such as racism, sexism and homophobia. The other convention for this genre is the way that story overall goes, story structure is also one of the important parts. In my opinion the good place to start with my own educational narrative piece is to jot down or break down the whole idea of the story I want to talk about, understand if I want to write only from my point of view or add the other people’s perspectives as well. For now, I do not have any questions or concerns about a writing piece of my own, if I would have any, I will add it into the comments under this post. Post made by Julia (Iuliia) Khutsishvili

Homework 1.3

READ AND ANNOTATE : “Maybe I Could Save Myself by Writing”

READ AND ANNOTATE: “The Fourth of July” by Audre Lorde

WRITE: (250 Words)  So far in this unit, we have read three examples from the genre of the “education narrative.”  Your first essay assignment in this class will be to write in this genre yourself.  So in this discussion forum, I’d like us to have a conversation about what the features of this genre are. Please discuss some of the following:

  • What, from what you’ve seen so far, are the “ingredients” (also known as “conventions”) of the education narrative genre?
  • What do you think might be a place to get started with your own education narrative?
  • What are your questions or concerns about writing an education narrative of your own?
  • If you like, you can also feel free to share an educational experience you had and ask for feedback from your colleagues (and me) to see if we think that might be a solid place to begin writing.

Homework 1.2

After reading the article “How to read like a writer” by Mike Bunn, we can easily identify his main point of view and his suggestions for us, as a reader(s). “Instead of reading for content or to better understand the ideas in the writing you are trying to understand how the piece of writing was put together by the author and what you can learn about writing by reading as a particular text.” By that Mike Bunn wants us to read as if we are the writers, to get into the novels / articles deeper and understand why the author made or maybe didn’t make a specific choice. Some of the things that I am as an author of my life do is set up the reminder’s app for all of the upcoming events and things to do through the week. It helps me to keep track of things and have a better understanding of how much time the specific thing will take me, i find it really useful in my everyday life. Also maybe sound a little weird but I also do vision boards, for a better understanding it is basically album of pictures that have a certain goal in them which I want to recreate at some point of life. In Mike Bunn’s article I found interesting these recommendations that I would want to use in a future reading, it is the questions to ask yourself beforehand reading through anything “Do you know the author’s purpose for this piece of writing?” and “Do you know who the intended audience is for this piece of writing ” page 7. Those questions in my point of view will lead you into digging deeper while reading and as well as writing, if i would be an author of an essay or an article I would ask myself those questions and my piece of writing will have more richer and fulfilling information than usual.  Post made by Iuliia Khutsishvili (Julia).
