Homework 1.3

From what Iā€™ve seen so far the ā€œingredientsā€ of the education narrative genre is experiences/events that happened in a persons Ā life and how they benefited from it. I think a good place to get started with your own education narrative is to write down a list of things that has happened to you doesnā€™t have to be bad unless you want that or thatā€™s how life has been for you. After you get your list you can narrow it down to the main 3 things that you see has had the more impact for you then narrow those 3 things into 1. Some concerns and question about writing my own education narrative Ā I have is about how do I start the narrative off ? Do I start it off by questioning the event Iā€™m talking about ? Do I say have you ever experienced what Iā€™ve been through etc.? Or do I say what do a person in my situation do about it etc? If I was to start off writing my own educational experience I would give some background information on my life and school life as well. But as well I donā€™t think I have any educational experiences. Do you consider being embarrassed because my parents were immigrants and they had strong accents that I never really liked them going to my parent teacher conferences? Iā€™m still confused on what you consider educational experiences. I did read the 2 articles where one person felt like they didnā€™t belong because they were an immigrant and the other where the person didnā€™t belong because Ā of the time period segregation was still going on. Thatā€™s the only question I really had.

Home Work 1.3

Ā  Ā  What an educational narrative consists of are personal life experiences, controversial topics and your stand on them, a person’s way of working through their challenges and the way it helped shape who they are. The education system is a part of every student’s life and every student has a different experience. The system has helped children and young adults learn so they can be someone in this world. Altho many students have their different experiences the system has helped students build interest and that plays a part in the person they want to be in the future.
Ā  They are narratives that give different perspectives on topics. A place to start my educational essay would be writing about my background and my experience with having only Spanish speaking parents in the U.S, this really affected my education journey. At a young age it was only limited the amount of help I could get from my parents with the homework I had from school. I remember I had a really hard time in school and that led my parents to get a tutor for me since they also realized the limited amount of help they could provide me with. Having a tutor not only helped me build my commuting English skills but it led me to be more confident in science, math and I was approaching a stage where I was becoming comfortable with approaching homework and school readings by myself. As stated this tutorĀ  helped a lot but I was attending a bilingual school that allowed me to at least speak Spanish but my family moved and I had to transfer to a fully English speaking school and it felt like a step backwards for my educational journey. This was very different and difficult. I think back to the moments where me and my mother would stay up very late translating homeworkā€™s and trying to figure out how to make friends and communicate school by myself I had ESL classes which helped me be able to find a way through English and without knowing I was reading speaking and writing English with little to no trouble, while being able to manage speaking only Spanish at home.
With my experience the educational system in NYC is really helpful with us students who enter school with little to no English experience. They do their best to provide students with the tools they need to succeed in a world where speaking English seems and is like a survival skill to have. I donā€™t have any questions about writing a educational narrative.

Homework 1.3

The ā€œingredientsā€ of an education narrative can include personal life experiences and anecdotes that shape and mark a person in their life, opinions on topics, and how this journey impacts a personā€™s identity. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and we go through different life journeys. This makes everyone have a different experience when it comes to education. Some of us are immigrants and this has an impact on our education. As an immigrant, I could relate to the education narratives we have read. All the anecdotes that the authors have shared have shaped their identity. Writing has enabled them to understand situations that we immigrants and people of color go through.

For my education narrative, a good place to get started would be writing about where I come from and the values my parents have taught me in terms of education. For example, I can start writing about how my mother being a teacher had an impact on my education, as well as how my parents always tried to make me one of the best students at school, which also affected my experience with education. Then, I could write about my experience moving to the United States and adapting to a new educational system. When my family moved to this country, they were scared of the education system. People would tell them things that are not necessarily always true and try to scare them. I demonstrated to those people that these things do not always happen if you are dedicated and do your best. Those are some of the things I can incorporate into my education narrative.

As of now, I do not have any questions regarding education narratives.
