Homework 1.3

After reading three examples from the genre “education narratives” I think some conventions included in this type of writing would be writing in a first person point of view, describing any feelings or thoughts, and including the context or setting. I think making sure the narrative has a solution or possible outcome is needed to get started because in each story we were introduced with a problem and then given a solution from this problem. Some context on the situation and one’s self is also very crucial when writing education narratives. This is because the readers are able to connect to the story on some level, and can also understand it due to the details provided. Some questions I have are how can I make sure my story is understood, or how can i make sure the reader is interested in the outcome if they don’t relate. I was considering writing about an art teacher that did not help me when I needed it. This lack of help made me do poorly in that class freshmen year, but allowed me to grow as a student and as a person. For instance, her lack of helping me made sure that I would seek the help I needed when I had trouble. It made me stand up for myself because it sucks that there are teachers as ignorant as her. I think by writing an education narrative such as this would make a relatable story for students, and be also eye opening for teachers who don’t understand that students are human as well. (Not talking about any of my professors, high school is completely different than college!!!)

Homework 1.3

From the stories we have reviewed in this class so far the conventions of the educational narrative genre are consisted of things that mark who you are as a person based on what you write about. Your point of view on a topic, a personal life experience, etc. I think a good place to get started with my own educational narrative would be just to start writing about small yet impactful memories in my life that I’ve had. The reason I say this is because since this style of writing would have been based on me, I personally would find this more difficult than writing about a character that I could just make up an easy story for.

Growing up I struggled a lot in school when is came to communication as there was a language barrier. I am not from America and came here in the mid year of second grade, so it was hard for me to interact with my teachers on school related topics for the first years of school in America. As the years followed my understanding of the English language got better but, I grew self conscious of my pronunciation and that then led me to become more reserved. During middle school is when I started leaning towards reading books, since I had found it hard to interact with because of me not being a big talker. When I got to high school I was surrounded with all of these clubs, and one of them ended up being a book club that my English teacher told me to join, and I was so glad I did because in that club we didn’t have to talk. Not one bit. We were just told to read and then write about what we were reading in what ever way we wanted to. And that was all I needed. Next thing you know, without even thinking about it, I started talking to people a making friends along the way. Till today I still struggle interacting with new people to the point that people sometimes think I’m rude, but I think that college will help me when it comes to being more social.

The main concern I have is having to continue writing in this narrative genre since I’m not used to this style.

HW 1.3

The “ingredients” that i’ve seen from the education narrative genre are that the writings are mostly personal experiences that are life lessons for the authors. The writings are turning points in the authors life that can also be relatable to readers too. A place I can get started with my own education narrative is looking back to what event has made me to the person I am today and how it can also be an event that could happen to someone else or has already happened and some people can relate to it already. I can also look back to what changed my perspective on a certain subject that can also change other peoples perspective which can be educational. My only questions and concerns that I have about writing educational narratives are that whether or not I am able to convince readers or educate them about something that I have experienced personally. I also question on how an educational narrative is formatted since I have never written one before. One educational experience I have had before is when I learned how influential i can be to my brothers. I used to not listen to my parents a lot and would disobey them constantly, and when I saw my brothers do the same, I knew it was my fault. So I would tell them to not do that and I would also stop being disobedient so that I would set a better example to them because that is what older brothers do. This experience would change me as a person because I am now a more responsible person and set a great example for my brothers.
