H.W 2.2

Something I was interested in as a kid was styling and fashion. I always knew I wanted to be a fashion designer. I never really did any fashion design when I was little but I still said in the future I wanted to become one. I am still interested in fashion, I still like to dress up, and I still want to have a career in fashion design. Research online as well as asking questions to people I knew who did styling and were into fashion helped me understand more about the topic and continue to be interested in it while growing up. My curiosity on this topic has increased over the years. Before, I really didn’t prepare myself for my career and didn’t take the steps, skills I needed or knowledge I needed to have in order to study fashion design. But over the past three years, I have prepared and enhanced my skills and knowledge about the topic. The educational system helped me a lot in order for me to really become more interested gain more knowledge and be able to understand if I really want a career in fashion. I tried to give up but realized that being a fashion designer is what I really want to accomplish.

In “A Talk to Teachers” by James Baldwin, he illustrates the importance for new generations to be able to know and understand our history, as well as the significance of being aware of our society and our future. When Baldwin states that the world is “larger”, what he means is that besides learning what is taught to us in schools about history and society, we have the right to question and deeply think about the ‘Why?’ of things and why things are the way they are. He wants us to analyze the wrong behaviors in society and not ignore them, but to act and change the wrong things. This is why he tells us we have “the right and necessity to examine everything”.

Something I wish I had learned about in school is career development skills involving public speaking, interviews, resume and portfolio building, writing cover letters, creating career goals, and networking. School does help you get the knowledge you need and get a high school diploma but they don’t really help you with whatever happens after that. Since a large majority of students apply for internships or jobs after high school, it is important for them to have these required skills. And usually, it is hard for them to figure these things out by themselves. This is why I think that if schools had career development classes, students would be able to succeed more in their careers and get a headstart before finishing school.

Homework d.1

The article “Later” by James Surowiecki depicts the idea of procrastination as something we all struggle with sometimes. Something I found confusing is when the author illustrates McClellan’s struggles with procrastination during the Civil War. He states: “In 1862, despite an excellent opportunity to take Richmond from Robert E. Lee’s men, with another Union army attacking in a pincer move, he dilly-dallied, convinced that he was blocked by hordes of Confederate soldiers, and missed his chance.” I had to re-read this sentence about two or three times to understand the description that the author was trying to convey. I think this is a very good example that the author uses to show how even war leaders and generals struggled with procrastination. Sometimes complex contexts like war and words that were used in the past might be hard to understand. Another thing that I found difficult to comprehend was when the author depicts Ulysses’ experience on the ship. The author states: “Ulysses knows that when he hears the Sirens he will be too weak to resist steering the ship onto the rocks in pursuit of them, so he has his men bind him, thereby forcing him to adhere to his long-term aims”. I was able to comprehend the imagery and description used by the author but it was difficult to relate it to his main point of the paragraph, which is that we should rely on external tools to help with procrastination.
