HW 2.2

Something that I was curious about when I was younger is the way of life of big cats. For example lions and cheetahs. I think I am still interested in this topic but I am not as interested in it as I was when I was younger. Since I usually asked my dad about this topic and he wasn’t quite educated in this field I wouldn’t really get an answer to my questions. I think this made me more curious because I felt the need to know. How was it that these animals survived in the conditions and environment they lived in? Eventually I started watching Youtube videos about these animals on national geographic, this helped answer most of my questions.  I think after getting the answers to my questions I began to do less research into the topic because I felt well educated and satisfied with what I had learnt. I think I still have some interest in these animals today because I believe that there is always new information and I love learning about these animals. I think the school system had a negative impact on my curiosity. I believe this because I remember when I first moved to the U.S and learning about the school system I began to ask less questions since a lot of time teachers didn’t care or they wouldn’t take out time to answer those questions. Now I rarely ask questions in class or if I do have a question I would usually just resort to searching it up after class. So I do believe that the school system had a negative impact on my curiosity today.

HW 2.1

I believe the author, James Baldwin is encouraging his student to not only explore the extensive history of America but he is also encouraging him to expand his knowledge of the world. He wants his student to know that nothing can stop or restrict him from expanding his knowledge. When the author says “the world is larger” I gather he means that the world is more than just America and has so much more to know.”…he has the right and the necessity to examine everything.” is something the author also says, by this he means that the students can investigate or try to know more about anything he wishes without any obligation. The student will also need to know more to further expand his knowledge in order to find his identity. Something that I wish I was taught that I wasn’t in school was taxes and learning how to deal with my finances. I think these are very important things that the school system fails to inform you about. These are very useful day to day knowledge and skills to have since you will be needing it for the rest of your life. Although you can teach yourself, it would be harder and time consuming, which we all know we don’t have much time. Many people still struggle today organizing their finances and many often have to pay accountants to do their taxes for them. If these skills and knowledge about taxes and finances were added into high school curriculum then it would have made many peoples’ lives easier.

D.1

This article speaks about the many different experiences with procrastination and why it is a thing. Something that bored me with this article was that it was very long. I believe something that made me procrastinate on reading this article was seeing the amount of pages that it had. I think the sentences were very long and it was hard to keep up with some points. But I will say that I do somewhat relate to it. For example I can relate to thinking I have more time than I actually do. In the article on page 7, it states, “Elster thinks that people underestimate the time ‘it will take them to complete a given task, partly because they fail to take account of how long it has taken them to complete similar projects in the past and partly because they rely on smooth scenarios in which accidents or unforeseen problems never occur.'”. I often don’t plan ahead for situations that may come up. For example, I could have a paper to do but then procrastinate and then maybe a family emergency will come up causing me to have less time which leads me to be late with my submission of my paper. Something that I found that was interesting was that lack of confidence has a role in procrastination. In the text on page 8, it says, “McClellan’s “immobility” highlights several classic reasons we procrastinate. Although when he took over the Union army he told Lincoln ‘I can do it all,’ he seems to have been unsure that he could do anything. He was perpetually imploring Lincoln for new weapons, and, in the words of one observer,’he felt he never had enough troops, well enough trained or equipped.’Lack of confidence…”. This example shows that even a general faced procrastination during the war because of lack of confidence. He didn’t believe that he could carry out the task even though he was well prepared for fear that he would fail. I never thought that lack of confidence would have a role in procrastination.
