HW 2.1

I think that what James Baldwin is saying is that if he were to teach, he would teach his students that they don’t have to follow the rules given to them. They can do what they want to do and not follow what the “administration” tells him to do. When he says that the world is larger, I think he means that There is way more to do than what students are taught. Students are taught to learn a limited amount of jobs and told that those are their only options. Baldwin states that it isn’t true, that there is so much more to do in the world other than what you are taught. Baldwin stating that having the “necessity” to examine is to learn more about what you have questions about. In other words, you have the right to question what you are being taught. Whether if what you are learning is good for you or not. It also means to not be afraid of asking about certain topics you are interested in and want to learn more about. I wish that I have been taught about real world uses like learning about taxes, insurance, banking, and other important aspects of life that everyone should have a simple understanding in because I am stuck learning them now when I should’ve learned about them before. I want to know about these topics because they are something that I need later on in life and in order to not make any major mistakes within those subjects, I’d have to know what I’m doing in the first place.

HW D.1

The article “Later” was a somewhat interesting article. It talked about procrastination and how long it has been around for. I relate personally to this article a lot and it is part of the reason as to why I find it interesting. One of the things I found frustrating was how procrastination is explained. In the article they explain it as a will to be able to do the tasks you need completed. But it also states that when people find their own solutions to solving their “will” problem, it isn’t a real solution, it is their “extended will”. I find this frustrating because making your will stronger doesn’t have to be the only solution to your procrastination problem. If there is a simple and easy solution that best fits you, I feel that you should stick with it. Other than this frustration, I think the article is very informational. It provides a good amount of information about procrastination that I for sure did not know about. For example, the article talks about an experiment where people chose to get a hundred dollars today or a hundred and ten the next. They also did the same with a month difference. They later found out that people would rather wait a month and a day for the extra ten rather than an extra day. “In other words, hyperbolic discounters are able to make the rational choice when they’re thinking about the future, but, as the present gets closer, short-term considerations overwhelm their long-term goals.“ This means that some people don’t think clearly about their goals depending on the time window. If they can get something that benefits them now, then they would take it immediately. But if they know that they have time to wait, they would make the best choice possible for their future.

HW 1.4

The time that I had found out about my aunt graduating college and starting her career changed my views on education forever. My dad told me about his cousin graduating college and how she was gonna work with wind turbines and also travel around the world. She lived in Detroit but was moving to Texas for her career. She would post all about her job and how she really enjoyed it. My aunt being praised by our family and seen as one of the successful members of the family inspired me to finish school and to also get a career just like her. I also took inspiration from her career choice because she works as an engineer and I saw how I can be an engineer since I also like to work with computers and hardware.

I have not seen education as being the number one goal in my life because I liked to do other things that I enjoyed doing. But I now know that education will build my future and get me to do what I want in life. I also find education interesting since I learn a lot more from it than i do anywhere else. My aunt made me realize all this and I appreciate her for it. I wouldn’t be as involved as I am in college than I was before I found out about her.
