- In Unit 2, I chose the topic, “How have laws changed from the 1800s to today.” I chose this topic because I believe that many of us, both adults and children, are unaware of what is going on with immigration, the laws in place, and how it impacts them. This is some information that I believe all students/children should be aware of because they do not receive sufficient information about it in school or outside of school. I want my readers (kids aged 10 to 13) to understand what immigration is, how it affects them, and what restrictions they must follow. I’d like to teach kids in a brochure, because I believe that visuals and text boxes in bubbles would attract their attention and encourage them to read it. My first step would be to gather my information and put it in simple form so they can be able to understand and not be questioning about any big words or anything like that. The only concern would be not getting the right information for my audience.

According to the article “Early Immigration Policies- USCIS,” policies in the 18th and 19th centuries were “Americans encouraged relatively free and open immigration,” implying that the United States was more friendly until the late 1800s. Where things started to change in the late 1800s. After the Civil War, certain states started passing their immigration laws. In 1875, the Supreme Court determined that immigration regulation was a government obligation. This marked an important change in the way the United States dealt with immigration. They were given more freedom and possibilities during the time. Later, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, as well as other immigration regulations that limited particular laborers and placed taxes on immigrants entering the United States, were enacted. These regulations were designed to limit immigration and exclude specific categories of people.

Research Question Proposal
Immigration is something that has been happening all around the world for numerous years. This is such a large ongoing problem that is still going on now, and I’d like to learn more about it. As a result, my research topic is, “How have US immigration laws changed from the 1800s to the present?” This fascinates me because many people, including my parents and grandparents, go through immigration. Because we don’t have a strong background story of immigration, I believe this is something we as young adults should look into and learn more about. We simply learn from what we observe. What I’m looking for specifically is how the laws have changed over time, from the 1800s to today. I’m sure it’s changed a lot since I last saw it. I’ve been seeing a lot of information on immigration in the news, but I’m not paying much attention to it. I’d like to learn more about immigration and what crucial information we should be aware of. How did each law they enacted/changed impact/affect all immigrants? What made them change? These are some of the things I’ll be looking for as I do my research.
