Questions / Prompts

  • How do we change the commercial design field to include a diversity of voices and visions?
  • What will the commercial design field and the study of design history look like in 20 years?

Reading Response

To change the commercial design field to include a diversity of voices and visions, we can spread awareness and educate people about design. Before, the majority of people who are presented in this field are the white people. Books, newspapers, magazines, online. Although it’s different now, there weren’t many designers outside the white race. They were pretty much rejected. Some artists had to self-teach themselves to learn design. But slowly, designs between other races rose. That’s because the people spread awareness of design. Other people held exhibitions, speeches, and events just so you know how to design something. Having a diversity of designs means many possibilities to design, so in order to create new designers, we pass down our knowledge of design to the future generation and watch them grow.

In 20 years, I can imagine the commercial design field and the study of design will be more professional, technology-based, and also, more importantly, more diverse. There will be a diversity of design you can look at and learn from. You can learn to appreciate their culture and their approach to design. It’s amazing how design can influence the world. Spreading awareness of designs to other races means having more variety and flavors. In the end, everyone will benefit from this and have an valuable experience.
