At the top of the post copy and paste the following: Walter Gropius; The Theory and Organization of the Bauhaus (1923), László Moholy-Nagy; Typophoto (1925), On Typography (1967) in Graphic Design Theory: Readings From the Field by Helen Armstrong on pages 32-34 and 44-49.
- According to these authors, what is missing from the art of the past?
- What role should typography, photography, and other media play in shaping a new kind of art?
- What role should language play in art and design?
- What sort of new strategies or ideas will be necessary for future art forms?
- What should education or “the academy” teach artists about their field?
According to these authors, the thing that I am missing from the art of the past is more individualism. These authors believe that even academies just teach what has been passed down and as a result designers often lack any sort of individual talent and understanding that is required in the field.
Typography, photography creates a new type of communication. Typophoto is a relatively new technique and can be found in book covers, magazines, and movie posters. Language should allow designers to express their culture, upbringing, and history. This is what makes designers unique because not everyone may have or know the same language.
For the future, I think having a lot of knowledge in typography and photography will be very helpful. I believe that being able to combine text and images will be at the forefront in the future of design.
The academy should avoid being too linear with what they teach students, and allow designers to express their work in their way. They should also make sure artists are updated and aware of new techniques and forms in the field. Having a well-rounded artist is a must in the industry as well, so these schools should make students take multiple areas of design.
