QUESTION: What kinds of relationships are likely to develop between artificial intelligence and humans? These two stories show two very, very different scenarios. Discuss these relationships in each of the stories and draw some speculation of how you imagine such relationships might develop in the future. Make sure to give strong and clear reasons as to why you think so.

MY RESPONSE: The stories by Chiang and Ellison both portray the relationship of humans and artificial intelligence, Chiang conveying a story of acknowledgment between humans and AI or you could say a kind of understanding of one another showcasing the potential benefits of building a healthy relationship between humans and artificial intelligence. Chiang explores the ins and outs of creating artificial intelligence in the form of virtual beings called “digients”. The concept of consciousness and personhood in relation to these AIs, as they evolve through interactions with their creators and the virtual world. Chiang expands on the questions surrounding the responsibilities that come with creating artificial intelligence as well as the emotional connections that can form between humans and their AI creations. The story raises many questions about the rights and treatment of artificial intelligence such as what it means to be human versus a highly sophisticated program.

Ellison does the complete opposite and gives us a story about the negative relationship between humans and AI. The AI in Ellison’s story actually harms human because of the lack of a healthy relationship between the humans and AI. The characters in ellison’s story endure conflicts as advanced AI called AM torment them physically and psychologically, reflecting leaving them powerless and giving them a feeling of hopelessness. Ellison dives deep into the dark side of technology and its potential to dominate and control humanity through vivid imagery and many other techniques used throughout the story. This story serves as a warning about the dangers of unchecked technological advancement and highlights the resilience of humans in the face of  situations that may grow to be overwhelming.

This shows to us readers a new perspective of what could happen if the relationship between humans and AI is neglected or isn’t properly developed. Both stories speak on relationships of humans and AI which both empower the idea that out of the two stories it’s a better idea to make sure AI is properly developed before releasing any final versions of it.

  1. You’ve got potential in your first paragraph, but you have chopped off and undeveloped sentences.

Vivid imagery and what other techniques? Can you be more specific?

This sentence, right here, sounds like bull. “This story serves as a warning about the dangers of unchecked technological advancement and highlights the resilience of humans in the face of situations that may grow to be overwhelming.”

If you wrote that sentence, you should try not to write sentences like that. Ever. Complete AI sounding. I ran the AI detection on this post and it says that it is AI generated. I’m not willing to go so far, but I’m fairly certain that is the kind of sentence we don’t need in our sci-fi class. The final paragraph sounds the same.

I see how you tried to establish a Formal introduction to your paragraphs but also struggled on establishing some syntax in your wording

AI is a fascinating subject, that is very integral right now. Nvidia just announced their intentions towards AI, and we just have to trust that they will try to be ethical and consider their creation, like the characters in the story attempt to treat the Digients.
