A survey of the development of architectural and scenic styles in the physical structure of theatre from its beginnings in ancient Greece to its most current forms. Emphasis placed on the stylistic influences of theoreticians and artistic movements. Interdisciplinary Option: This course is a conversation between theater history and architecture. As such, the work in class focuses on purpose-built and adapted spaces for live performance. Each week we will examine historical theatre spaces and technologies in the context of prevailing cultural and social forces in order to better understand audience/stage relationships. To fulfill the interdisciplinary requirements for this course, specialists from architecture, art history, and performance technology will guest lecture six times over the course of the semester.Students will learn skill-sets from architecture technology: GIS mapping and hand sketching. 3 Credits / Meets every 2 weeks. Prerequisites: Design 4 & Building Tech 4 This elective course allows students with a course director-approved internship/job to enroll. Student assignments include a running journal of events and experiences at the workplace for class discussion, as well as opinion reviews, written and graphic reports, and a final presentation of project/s produced at the internship workplace. A historical analysis of the city’s infrastructure, real estate development, municipal planning, ordinances and key buildings using the comparative method. The class will trace the course of architectural history from the village to the present role of the city as the commercial and cultural hub of the nation. This course will stress the dynamic socio-economic determinants emerging as a result of improvements and growth in technology, transportation, infrastructure, real estate, commerce, housing and recreation.

Welcome to English 1101! This course focuses on writing both short and long pieces in many different genres on a range of topics. We will learn basic research techniques that include using the library, how to choose accurate and credible sources, and how to evaluate, synthesize, and analyze the sources with a critical lens. We will (re)discover key writing techniques and strategies to make our writing stronger and more effective. We will engage with traditional texts and multimedia sources as a guide for our writing, a source of information, and to generate stimulating classroom conversations. Throughout the course, we will also frequently pause to reflect on the writing process and what we have learned so far. The course culminates with a revised portfolio of all your finished work and will consist of at least 6,000 words. Don’t panic! It will include a combination of your favorite low-stakes writing assignments, some of our shorter writing pieces (composed both in class and at home), our culminating writing assignment and a final reflective piece.
