Week 7

Gordon Parks. Untitled (Harlem Gang Wars). 1948

The Gordon Parks photos encompass a lot of human rights and black culture photography, and as such, can be easily misused, misrepresented. This could cause quite a bit of outrage in the wrong context. When it comes to the use of the photos I think it’s important to note that proper use of appropriation would need to be done to use these and they would need to be changed sufficiently to take on an inherently new meaning. I would think it would be difficult with some of these pieces but it really comes down to which photos a user chooses and how they change them, or alternately how they get permissions to use them. One could easily argue that wrongful use of the photo where the owner of the photo, or its subjects are misrepresented could be problematic. Much like the issue with the zoo we talked about in class where they had people in animal costumes in the exhibits to pose as real, the misleading of the public, and misrepresentation of the “subject” would land someone in real trouble, especially with such sensitive topics nowadays.
