This week I went to a networking event online about being a freelancer 101 and they were talking about more of the business side of it which I think is very much needed because when you hear about freelance the business side is rarely talked about. This event was hosted by AIGA Colorado and the guest speaker was Kim Mallek. She is the owner of Mighty Fudge Studios, an animation studio based in Colorado. She covered things like how to cover your business legally, including things like checking if your business name is available, registering for an EIN, getting a business banking account and more. This was very interesting because it’s not something I would have thought about, especially the separate business bank account to keep funds separate.
She also covered things like taxes, resources to use, potentially hiring and accountant and how much to set aside for taxes which was definitely good to know. I was surprised at how much she was saying, 30%, I thought that it would be much higher.
The last interesting thing that she covered which had I not attended I would have never thought about is insurance. Insurance as a freelancer is expensive, but she gave a great resource that was specifically for freelancers as well as business insurance if needed. It was all very informative.
