“Shitty First Drafts” – Tiffany Russo

After reading “Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lamontt I realized that we are similar when it comes to writing. She believes that great writing starts with terrible first ideas. I definitely agree with Lamontt. I’m not great at starting my writing but after a while I get used to it and many ideas begin to pop up and it comes out great. Her writing process starts off as expressing what she notices and hears, she doesn’t mind that it doesn’t sound great, all that matters is that she has something that is being written for a start. She then crosses out her writing if she doesn’t like it and rewrites. Although she knows it’s a first draft she doesn’t care what’s being written. Lamontt adds details and goes over her writing to see what she needs in order to start her second draft. We are very similar, I say this because as I’m thinking about what to write sometimes I feel as if my brain stops working. I try my best to come up with something perfect to start off but it never works out, I stopped caring about trying to make my writing perfect. I started to write all of my ideas on paper even if it didn’t sound right and fixed it later on once I got the hang of the topic and what needed to be written. I have times where I need to cross out sentences I don’t like and I create it into something better. Writing in the beginning isn’t usually my strong suite but once I get focused and have all of my ideas written it turns out great in the end.

“How to Read Like a Writer” – Tiffany Russo

As I was reading “How to Read Like a Writer” by Mike Bunn, I came across something that was written which stated “ you are already an author”. In my opinion this means we are able to read and write and this can allow us to learn more skills. Reading someone else’s work can influence us in our own writing. We read and write on a daily basis for example when reading road signs while driving we have to read or even when someone texts us we have to read in order to respond correctly. When you read, this helps you understand how to respond or even decide what you want to include in your writing. Some of the things that I write already are different types of genres, I usually write essays and sometimes short story’s. I’m constantly adding dialogue along with quotes. In Mike Bunns article I noticed that he spoke about “style of writing” which is something I definitely need to work on. It’s quite difficult For me to be humorous or show any type of emotion and tone through my writing but I would love to work on this. I even noticed that he gave many questions we should be asking ourselves as we read such as, do you know the author’s purpose for this? Do you know who the intended audience is? Is the language that the author uses effective? How did the writer stay in my memory? And how did the writer get me to feel? All of these questions are extremely helpful to better understand what we are reading and this can even assist us when we write so we can have many choices and techniques when it comes to our own writing. Reading “How To Read Like A Writer” definitely gave me many choices and ideas of what I should include in my writing. I can’t wait to begin writing so I can try these new techniques and see how it turns out in my own writing.

INTRO-Tiffany Russo

One word that describes what I’m feeling about this course would be determined. Last semester I honestly wasn’t motivated at all with everything that was going on. For this semester I decided to set goals for myself to better my future by putting effort into what I want to achieve. I’m determined to learn new skills and gain more knowledge through this English course and apply this to my everyday life. This is one step closer to helping me achieve my goals in graduating and getting into a career that I will enjoy. I love writing and expressing my thoughts but one thing I’m concerned about is my time management. I am a full time student and I also work from home. Throughout the week I help my sister at the same time that I have classes because she is still little so it’s pretty tough to juggle both. Being an online student is a little easier for me because I’m able to be a lot more flexible without having to have the struggle of leaving my home to make my way to school, work or taking my sibling to school everyday.

This picture means a lot to me because this is one of the goals that I have set for myself. This Audi R8 is my dream car, and I’m willing to stay extremely focused and have a great career to save up and be able to afford this dream car of mine!
