Anecdote

There are several anecdotes that comes to my mind when I think of education. One of them is when I was in elementary school, I realized I could not pronounce “shoulder” or “soldier” properly. I tried to always avoid the two words (I still do sometimes). When I grew up, there was a song that became very popular. It’s called “Crank That” by Soulja Boy. The rapper called himself Soulja Boy and I thought, it sounds very similar to “shoulder” and “soldier.” For a short period of time, I pronounced shoulder and soldier as “soulja.” I didn’t think anyone would notice. I couldn’t say “soulja” forever, so I practiced saying the two words using Google and. Youtube. I successfully learned how to pronounce “soldier” and “shoulder.” Looking back at how I would say “soulja” for the words “shoulder” and “soldier” is funny. I was young and it was a short term solution for my mispronunciation. I didn’t seek for help and tried figuring it out myself.

Another anecdote that comes to my mind is when I wrote my first essay and received a feedback that I needed a hook sentence. Coming to a new country, I had no idea what a hook sentence was. I’ve never heard of such thing. I learned about hook sentences by googling of course. I learned about a new technique in writing. It’s an opening to attempt to grab the reader’s attention, that way they’ll want to continue reading. Earlier during this course, we learned about different writing techniques, such as a quote, or question, or something funny. That is basically what it is – a hook sentence. I was embarrassed that I didn’t know the term that was used for a strong opening statement as a “hook sentence.” Thank goodness for Google.

Genre

The type of genre I have been interacting with a lot is Youtube vlogs. Vlogs are created to educate, entertain, or share opinions with the public. One of my favorite vlogger from Youtube is Jason Billam Travel. He’s from the UK and travels all over the world. He shows his viewers the different culture and food all around the world. He provides travel guides, tips, and shares his opinions on whether or not it’s safe to travel in certain places.  There are plenty of other vloggers that travel all around the world, but they mostly show the tourist attractions. Jason Billam Travel shows the raw experience in different countries. He visits the local areas. I watch his videos because some day I want to travel around the world and learn about different cultures. I want to experience new cultures, new food, and language. Watching his vlogs has taught me to be open minded and understand why certain people do certain things. He has inspired me to travel the world myself someday. Another one of my favorite Youtube Vlogger is Doctor Mike. He makes medicine understandable. He also gives tips on how to eat healthy and stay fit.

I have been interacting with Youtube vlogs because vlogs expose viewers to new things that we can achieve. When we see someone is doing something, we think, we can also do what they’re doing. I plan to start making Vlogs as well once I begin to travel. It’s one of my goals.

The type of genre of Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” is an essay. She writes specifically about her English. In the essay, she write about the difficulty of being raised by her mother who spoke limited English and how others couldn’t understand her broken English. Amy Tan essay changes to a personal reflection about how she succeeded.

Shitty First Drafts

After reading “Shitty First Drafts,” my views haven’t really changed much. Lamott’s writing process is similar to my writing process. My first drafts are never perfect. I would usually brainstorm, write a first draft, write a second draft, and finally my third draft. The first draft is usually the main points of each paragraph. The second draft is where I input additional information, evidence, arguments, or discussion. The second draft is where more ideas and thoughts develop as well. The third draft is more like proofreading my writing. It’s helpful to go over it the third time in case I missed something and an idea wandered off.

A process I would borrow is how Lamott would visit a restaurant several times before writing a review. I know a few people that run review pages for restaurants and they would review the restaurant after just one visit. Lamott takes time with the reviews and seems to be very detailed about it. The author would also take other people opinions and use quotes from friends.

I don’t think there is a step that I would consider using in my own writing. However, the process of food review is a great way of sharing a good review and it’s something I will pass on to my friends that write reviews on food and restaurants.
