” Shitty first drafts”

After reading Lamott’s process my writing views have not changed as much. Simply because our writing styles are similar; When creating a first draft similar to Lamott one would naturally create an idea page where you write down any ideas, any feelings towards these ideas, and whatever else my be valuable to creating a successful draft in the end. The point that Lamott makes is that every writer goes through a process to create the perfect text. She specifically has her own methods where she takes a few steps in writing to ensure everything is perfect to her. She creates 3 separate drafts in which the first one is addressed as the trashy one, the second draft is used to start cleaning up ideas and actually putting the thoughts together and begin writing. The 3rd draft is the final draft that is written, cleaned up and ready to publish at last, and by creating these 3 drafts it allows the writer to put together an amazing piece. While reading the text I realize that my writing styles are very much similar to Lamott’s and therefore I feel as though I can continue to use the same process towards my own writing pieces.

How to read like a writer

After reading this article when Mike Bunn makes a reference that says ” You’re already an author” I believe that he means that everyone creates their own story and writes it in their own way. We use writing in many ways such as when we text our friends & family, when we make comments on social media, and even when we physically write for example journaling. When you create thoughts of your own and write them down or even verbally discuss them with others you become an author. Your life is a story itself, you create the memories, you write about your life and everything you’ve experienced. A great author always plans out their writing using a template of their own. Meaning that they ask themselves who & what should they involve, why is this topic special or important to me and how can it relate to larger audiences and lastly how can the audiences attention be grabbed quickly. When writing my own papers I used this template to help draft my ideas and topics eventually putting them onto paper and building some type of story. I do believe that writing in my everyday life will help me very greatly being that I am a law major and law requires a lot of reading and writing. I will be able to become more comfortable with writing longer and larger texts and become a better writer in general. Something that I would like to take away from Bunn’s writing to incorporate in my own is being able to tell a story and keep the audiences attention the entire time. Writing is a way of learning to open up and making sure a vision comes to life through writing.

Intro- Alanna Petit-Homme

One word to describe how I am feeling would be anxious. I would say I am anxious because as my second semester begins I am afraid that I would start to lose track of my goals and start to get lazy. Online school is not something that works for me because I am more of an in person visual learner and even after a few months I still have to get used to being online. However I do plan on finding methods that help me such as holding myself accountable for the semester, communicating with my teachers & just pushing myself on a daily and consistent basis. All of these methods would truly help me stay on track in order to achieve my goals. This picture has meaning to me because it captures both of my goals of being a college graduate and becoming very successful in the law field.
