Professor Kate Poirier, Spring 2017

Category: Introduce yourself (Page 2 of 3)

Introducing Jason Pena

My major is Computer Systems Technology (IT Operations track). I’ve been interested in computer science for as far as I can remember. I’ve always been fascinated and enjoyed using, troubleshooting, and building computers, configuring systems, and learning how they work and I can consider it one of, if not, my first love. I am a big sports fan and support most of the NYC teams (Yankees, Knicks, Rangers, NYCFC, among others) as well as an avid gamer.

After I graduate I am hoping to obtain an entry-level position doing System Administration, most likely in a Windows (Active Directory/SCCM)/VMware environment. Long-term, I would probably like to be a senior SysAdmin for a company I love. I also want to travel and visit a lot of the continental US. I hope to gain a new way of thinking and understanding elementary coding and programming.

Introducing Yaqoob Junjua

  • Your major- my major is CST(Computer Systems Technology) and I am heading towards Networking Security.

Introducing Kenny Pang

My name is Kenny Pang and my major is Applied Math. I got interested in math because I find it quite easy. I always get high grades in math classes without having to study much. I currently don’t have any goals after graduation. Maybe I will find a job and work for a couple of years then I may decide to do something else. What I hope to get out of this course is the programming knowledge which may help me in the future. Some of my hobbies are playing video games and watching movies.

Intro to Christ-Brian Amedjonekou

Yea…My name is Christ-Brian Amedjonekou but you can refer to me with just “Chris”. It’ll be easier for all of us.

What’s my major?

Well I just recently transferred to the school. Last semester was my first semester here. At my other schools I was a computer science major with a minor in math. But currently I’m just an Applied Math major with a concentration in information sciences.

How did I get into math/computers?

Honestly, it was because of movies and anime. Live Free Die Hard was one of them and Ghost in the Shell is the other. But they’re really just some of the media involving technology that I like. Cyber Punk is one of my favorite genres. I’ve always messed with computers and somehow have been good at math although I didn’t realize that I liked it till recently. They’re really the only academic subjects that can keep engaged and interested but like all things, it depends, so don’t hold me to it. But for the most part it’s true. I like how resourceful you can be when you have prerequisite knowledge of processes and how they work.

What am I gonna do when I leave City Tech?

I’m trying to figure that right now actually. Long term? The idea is that I’ll do research in A.I. development, Robotics, and most likely security. Thank Ghost in the Shell for that. But I don’t really want to do it for an organization or company really. I rather have an environment similar to DefCon, a collective of some sort. But maybe they’re funded by major companies? I don’t really know. I guess I’ll have to figure that out. Bottom line I’m looking to be independent mostly collaborating with other people and groups but not super large companies. Short term? Trying to figure out how to make the long term possible.

What I hope to get out of this course? (You don’t mean which grade I want!)

An “A”, seriously <insert emoji>. Can I use emojis? Anyways from what I understand Discrete Mathematics focuses on the building blocks and processes that make maths like algebra, and I guess Calculus and Geometry, work. I equate it to how assembly acts as the middle man between higher programming languages and machine code. But maybe I’m wrong. Either way I’m interested in seeing how this study of discrete math relates to other topics I’m interested in, and the world in general. I already can see with logic that it fits in with computers, electronics, probability.

Other interests/hobbies I have?

My hobbies include working out, playing tennis, basketball, learning how to skateboard and play bass. I hear that people who are good at math are also good with music, so I want to give it a try. Plus I’d like to live out my delusions of being a sick bassist in a band. I also like getting tattoos and piercings, and I game sometimes but only when I’m bored and not doing the other things. OH, and I like to make and sell glass bongs. Works of art really. (That last part’s a joke.)

side note: This last part sounds like one of those weird dating profiles you see in the commercials. Regardless nice to meet you all and I want to wish everybody luck during the semester. Peace.

Introducing Ka Yat Cheung

My name is Cheung Ka Yat. My major is Computer System Technology. Computer is a very useful tools that we all use it everyday for work or entertainment. Just with your finger tips, you can get what you are looking for. I am interested in this major because I want to know more about network, and how it works. I hope I can get a certification form Cisco or Microsoft, also get a networking job to gain experience in this field after I graduate form City Tech. In this class I want to learn more knowledge of algorithms.

Introducing Brian Ceyko

My major is CST, I’m interested in Computer Science, because since I was a kid, I played video games, and wanted to be able to make my own.  I enjoyed video games, so wanted to become a programmer to be able to create games other people will enjoy, like how I enjoyed the ones I played.  I want to be able to find a job in programming, more oriented in making games and fun programs, I hope to find a good company to hire me when I graduate. I’d like to find a job where they train me a little, and see what I know, and not just hire me, expecting me to know everything. I don’t mean to completely train me, just to get me set up with what the company uses, and what they expect me to know to do my job.

I hope to learn interesting things from this course that math can be used to find. I prefer using math for practical uses, as opposed to some formula’s that are rarely ever used in the real world, other than among other mathematically inclined people.  From what we learned so far, it seems this math course will teach us logical ways to use math, since similar math is used in engineering and programming. It’s interesting that these methods can be used to determine whether a mechanic, or piece of code will work by thinking more like how a computer does when interpreting code.

The closest thing I have to a hobby is that sometimes I like to draw, or try to use paint programs to make images. I sometimes experiment with trying to make/edit music, but I don’t have as much experience doing so, and usually stop after a short time.

Introducing Jiayu Zhen

Hello, I am Jiayu Zhen. My major is Computer Systems Technology. When i was 6 years old, my dad bought me the first computer . That was  pretty awesome that you can see a new world on the screen. I was attracted by the computer at that time. I feel I can’t live without computer in this information era. So, I got interested in computer science major. As the most college students want, I hope I can be hired in a good company after I graduate from City Tech. In this class, I want to learn more about logical thinking and algorithms, in order to  make the process of programming easier.  I love sports,  I enjoy playing computer and I like music and history.

Introducing Shannon Lewis

Hello, my name is Shannon Lewis and I am in my last year of being a  Biomedical Informatics Major. When i graduate from City Tech , I just want a job that will put my degree to good use and get closer on the path of starting my career, a career that is more along the lines of Health Administration or anything along the lines of health care. Also, eventually I may  also want to enroll into Graduate School but I am not sure yet. Even though I registered pretty late and this was one of the only classes that fit into my schedule, I would like to know more about this subject since I have never heard of it before and how I can apply it to real life situations. Besides this, my hobbies are reading and hanging out with friends while having a good time. I also like to travel when I have a chance to do so.

Introducing David Kirsch

Hello!

My name is David Kirsch and my major is Computer Systems Technology. Before returning back to college, I was a performer. I graduated from a NYC conservatory in 2007 and performed around the country for 7 years. After making the decision to change careers, I figured I would go into a career that I was surrounded with my entire childhood, COMPUTERS! My father was a software developer, so I had read some of the books he would bring home. It was always interesting to me.

After I graduate from CityTech, I would like to get a job as a software developer, eventually working my way up to a Database Administrator. I would like to find a job that I could work overseas for a few years or part of the year.

During the course of this class, I would like to get a better understanding of algorithms and how they were built to overcome problems.

Although I changed careers, I still love taking dance classes, especially Tap. I enjoy going to the beach (in the summer) and traveling around the world too.
