Clifton McDowell Jr | Gurba’s Critique

So I was surprised at how frustrated and aggressive the writing was at first. My first impression was ā€œwow sheā€™s very passionateā€, and that by itself kept me reading. Her way of writing with English and Spanish, Iā€™m assuming probably is Spanglish, did sometimes confuse me because I didnā€™t entirely know what she was saying and I found myself going to google to look it up. Besides that though, she was very descriptive of everything, and you can tell she is very passionate and it never really felt too overwhelming. I believe she is the type to say whatā€™s on her mind and if you donā€™t like it then thatā€™s your problem. I feel could have dug a bit more into the different stereotypes that people have and show how those things can be broken. I can understand her when she said white people should not write about Mexicans because they donā€™t understand what it is to be Mexican or even live there. I feel the same way when people who are not black decide to give their opinions, or talk about our communities as if they have lived, or living in our shoes.

I agree with you on how she is very passionate in bringing her point across because she wants to inform people to understand Mexicans and the culture before having any ideas of stereotypes.

I agree, she addresses who her target audience is just fine and proceeds to speak on her feelings and slander Cummins did.

Gurba’s aggressive writing is also what kept me reading because I didn’t expect for a writer to use the tone she did. It worked out well for her though because several people agreed with her and I think it brought more attention to the issue of stereotypes.

I agree with you that Gurba’s aggressiveness is what kept me reading because it caught me off guard and it also made her story get more attention

The Spanglish confused me as well! I thought I was the only one who didn’t know what she was talking about. She was definitely very passionate about her writing and she had the right to be because Cummins did not know what she was talking about. You can’t write a book about an experience that you’ve never gone through.
