Research Question:

Does police subculture exist and if so what impact does it make on the public?

For most of the summer I saw a lot of unjustified situations where police officers used excessive force towards people they deemed dangerous and it got me thinking about the culture they’ve built as a community. If this so-called subculture does exist then will there be a chance at a balanced dynamic in the communities they vow to “protect and serve”. If police officers share this idea of us (the police) vs them (the public) then they will always deviate from what is considered acceptable in today’s society. I feel like this shouldn’t happen because when there’s a case of police brutality then that culture will again force them into the us vs them mindset. I’m interested in knowing if this subculture is gradually eliminated will it help lessen the amount of unjustified acts at the hands of police officers. Firstly, I expect to find multiple definitions of subculture and if police officers fall into their own category. I’m hopeful in also finding out the different disadvantages/advantages and seeing if they can be adjusted to best suit the public. I’ll also take a look at the impact police culture has on its own group and if that culture sensibly has the ability to override their judgement in certain cases. If something doesn’t fit into my initial hypothesis then I will do some more research and adjust my conclusion accordingly.Â
