The topic I have decided to pursue more in depth is the effects of climate change. This is a extremely pressing topic, and I hope to bring more light to the dire situation.

Notes:

  • by 2030, climate change costs are projected to cost the global economy $700 billion annually.
  • the Internal Organization for Migration estimates that 200 million people will be displaced due to the effects of climate change by 2050.
  • Scientists have high confidence that global temperatures will continue to rise for decades as a result of greenhouse gas produced by human activities.
  • Global temperatures rise by an average of 2.06 degrees since the late 19th century, in effect raising temperatures for things that shouldn’t that high of a temperature. – Due to this, the global sea level would rise due to giant melting glaciers.
  • Our human food supply readily depends on a steady, predictable climate. If the climate continues to become more and more unpredictable the human food chain would collapse and would put in danger our agricultural practices.
  • The individual who drives a car does not affect the climate. The companies who own fossil fuel companies who farm oil with extremely crude and effective but destructive methods affect climate change.

I did not learn much from the light research I have done for this assignment. Most of the research done is on well known facts, just more accurate statements. Everyone knows that climate change exists, and will happen sometime in the future, but the future is now and change needs to happen within the next 3 years. There has already been irreparable effects of climate change within the human lifespan. We will only see the effects of climate change within our lifetime, its already too late. The situation seems more and more bleak the more research is done. But change is never too late, there is always a chance to enact policies and bills that would help prevent more drastic effects. But due to the president we have currently, we are taxing the poor and giving tax breaks to the rich, the very rich who own Exxon and other fossil fuel companies that only wish to further escalate the problem for short term financial gains.

Questions:

  • Is there anything that the individual can do to make an effect on trying to limit the effects of climate change? no
  • In what ways will we see a future president take action in meaningful ways. Pass a bill that limits the amount of greenhouse gases released every year. Take meaningful action.
