In Douglass, Malcolm X and Jiang’s writings they all share their experience as being educated in both writing and reading. It’s very interesting how all three authors share similar stories about their education growing up. They share how incredible and life changing their education was. For example, Douglass, had a completely different view of his slavery because he was able to read about it through books. As he read and learned more, he became angry, angry that he didn’t fully understand how inhumane slavery actually was. As for Malcolm X, he learned to read through his experience in jail. He believed the idea of learning through books was fascinating, and helped him throughput the years in prison. In Jiang’s writing she writes that being illiterate was difficult for her and her grandmother. But they were able to communicate and learn with one another, which I think is beautiful due to their relationship as a grandmother and granddaughter. Each piece explains how learning to read and write was a life turning event, in different ways and different experiences.
