Jiang, Douglass, and Malcom X’s stories speaks about how they were able to read/write/learn through times of illiteracy. Jiang’s story talks about the hardships her family went through and despite her and her grandmother being illiterate, they wanted to learn and understand things by her grandmother asking different questions about the Mona Lisa. Douglass’s story talks about his methods of learning to read and write although slavery was ongoing and he himself was a slave. Malcom X’s story talks about how much he was unable to read and took the time to read and learn about black history while being in prison. These are the things that these 3 stories have in common and are why they are considered educational narratives.
